Yokogawa’s PIMS Selected by Shell Oil Products

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that Shell Oil Products has selected Yokogawa's Exaquantum Plant Information and Management System (PIMS) as the standard Operational Data System (ODS) for their East Zone. The East Zone is a geographic area that includes Middle East, South Asia, North Asia, Indochina, South Asia, China, Japan and Australia.

The Exaquantum system will be implemented in phases starting in 2002 at Shell's refineries in Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Australia. The new system replaces older UNIX and VMS based ODS which will be decommissioned.

During the 18-month evaluation conducted at Shell's Singapore's facilities, Yokogawa's Exaquantum was found to have a development strategy that embraces the open standards and flexibility of the latest Microsoft Windows NT and 2000 technology. In addition, the seamless integration of the system with their Distributed Control Systems was found to translate into reduced implementation time and lower long term maintenance cost. Shell's ODS functions as the data repository from which advanced control, optimization, planning and scheduling applications can draw historical data improving their ability to control and manage work processes. Due to the open design, Exaquantum allows the use of many standardized application solutions without the need to develop custom software.

"The standardization of Exaquantum by Shell's East Zone is a significant milestone for Yokogawa because it is recognition that we are a major Manufacturing Execution Systems supplier", says Akira Kohzuki, Senior General Manager, International Solutions Division. "Our relationship with Shell worldwide continues to bring benefits to both companies and we hope that this decision will influence other opportunities in the area. We are excited about Shell's selection because we respect their evaluation process and their implementation of this power technology."
