| Q&A regarding basic specifications | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Q | What is device configuration software used for? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A | It is used to make and adjust the settings of field devices that support a communications function. This software may be used on site (for example, at the junction boxes) or from a remote location such as the marshalling racks in a central control room. Various configuration tools for plants large and small are available on the market. These include our Plant Resource Manager (PRM) package for large-scale facilities that use a DCS and PC-based applications for relatively small applications. For instance, FieldMate is a PC-based configuration tool that communicates with field devices via a USB modem. It can be used for a variety of tasks, from routine maintenance to very detailed troubleshooting. It also has a database for device management. |

| Q | How does FieldMate function? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A | When the test clips of the USB modem for a FieldMate PC are attached to the positive and negative terminals of a HART or BRAIN field device or a marshalling rack, the device icon and operation status information are immediately displayed. FieldMate incorporates the open FDT/DTM*1 standard and is compliant with FDT 1.2 compatible device type managers (DTMs). *1 A field device tool (FDT) defines the system environment in which a DTM runs. A DTM is an application that defines the graphical user interface (GUI) specific to a device. *2 A DD is a computer readable file written in electronic device description language (EDDL) that describes the data in a field device. |

| Q | What FieldMate documentation is available? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A | The following reference documents are available:
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Q | Is FieldMate user registration required? How do you register? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A | You can install and use a licensed copy of the FieldMate software on a single PC for up to 30 days. You will need to complete user registration and obtain an Activation Key in order to be able to continue using FieldMate after that initial 30 day period has expired. User registration may be done at the FieldMate User Registration website. You will be prompted to provide the license number and the serial number of the hard disk (volume serial number) on which FieldMate is installed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
| Q&A regarding the specifications of the Basic and Advance versions | |
| Q | What is the main difference between the Basic and Advance versions? |
| A | The Advance version comes with a device management function for registering device maintenance information in the database. |
| Q | If my PC breaks down, how do I move FieldMate to another computer? |
| A | First, install FieldMate on the new PC. After that, login at the user site and select "Activate New PC" to obtain a new activation key. You will need to provide the volume serial number of your new computer. The new activation key will be sent to your registered email address. |
| Q | How do I complete user registration and obtain an activation key if the computer that I have FieldMate installed on cannot access the Internet? |
| A | You can register and obtain an activation key from any computer. Access the user site from another computer at work or home that has an Internet connection. To register as a new user, you will need to provide information such as the software license number and the volume serial number for the FieldMate PC. Instructions on how to find out the volume serial number for your PC are provided on the top page (scroll to the bottom of the page) of the user site. |
| Q | How do I find out the volume serial number that is required to obtain the activation key? |
| A | To obtain the FieldMate activation key, you must provide the volume serial number for the C drive of the computer that you are running FieldMate on. To find out this number, do the following: Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Command Prompt --> dir Note: When you select Command Prompt, a simple black and white window opens. Input the "dir" command and press the Enter key. At the very top of the list generated by the “dir” command (you might have to scroll up) you will see the phrase “Volume Serial Number is ...” This is an 8 digit alphanumeric character string. To obtain the activation key, input this character string without the hyphen when prompted to provide PC specific information. |
| Q | Is a BRAIN modem and modem cable included with my FieldMate purchase? |
| A | It is provided as an option and you will need to specify the option code when you place your order: /M for a HART modem (with cable) or /B for a BRAIN/HART modem (with cable). JUXTA series devices do not support the BRAIN communications protocol. |
| Q | Is JUXTA supported? |
| A | Not at this time. |
| Q | An unscheduled function block is discovered while communicating with a FOUNDATION™ fieldbus device. How can it be recovered? |
| A | Go to the DTM menu, Tools --> Function Block Execution Setting to set the schedule for the FOUNDATION™ fieldbus H1 device and specify a connection between function blocks. The operation time and schedule will be automatically set. These settings will be stored in the FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 devices. After installing a device under a host system, you will need to adjust the scheduling so that it matches the current segment configuration. |
| Q | Although I believe that FieldMate was correctly installed, it fails to open and I get an error message. How can I get it to work? |
| A | There is the possibility that you may have used double-byte Unicode characters for the user name. If that is the case, create a new user name with single-byte ASCII code and reinstall FieldMate. |
| Q | What is the difference between the online window and the offline window that is displayed when a DTM opens? |
| A | With the online window, parameters are set one at a time. (This is true as well for the calibration wizard.) The offline window is used to upload/download the parameters to/from the connected device all at once. These parameters can be stored and managed in the database. This is useful when replacing a device. Sample procedure with BRAIN DTM |

| Q&A regarding applications | |
| Q | The registered user has been reassigned to a different position and someone else needs to take over this work. How can the user registration be transferred to this new individual? |
| A | You will need to have the user ID (email address) and password of the registered user. Log in using that and go to "Update personal information" to change the user ID and receive a temporary system-generated password. (This can be changed by the user.) |
| Q | After completing FieldMate installation, I cannot get the modem to communicate with a device. Do I need to change any of the modem's settings? |
| A | Although the modem driver is automatically installed, some changes to the modem settings are required. Connect the modem to your PC and open Device Manager to confirm the COM port assignment for CP210x. Then, for HART communications, select HART Modem Configuration in the Tool menu and specify the same port number for the modem. Windows 7: Control Panel --> Hardware and Sound --> Device Manager Windows Vista: Control Panel --> Device Manager |
| Q | Can FieldMate be used on a Windows CE personal digital assistant (PDA)? |
| A | No, Windows CE is not supported. Only Windows Vista and Windows 7 are supported. If portability is a concern, use a small and lightweight notebook PC with specifications that meet all the requirements set out in the GS document. |
