Field wireless systems are ideal for SCADA applications where facilities and equipment are often in remote locations with harsh environmental conditions. This is because the wiring used to connect conventional devices tends to deteriorate under such conditions.
Improvement of maintenance efficiency
Field devices installed in difficult-to-wire locations are also difficult to maintain. The LCD screens on these transmitters are often hidden out of view, making it difficult for maintenance workers to access device information. With field wireless systems, diagnostic information can be displayed at SCADA human machine interface (HMI) stations in real time. And when such systems are combined with Yokogawa’s PRM plant asset management system, the device diagnostic information and maintenance history can be centrally managed.

Data storage functions for wireless applications
The loss of data due to an interruption in communications is a major concern with wireless communications. The greater the distance between the SCADA and wireless systems, the more potential there is for loss of the communications link. To address this issue, the STARDOM FCN/FCJ autonomous controllers that control field devices have a data buffer function. The SCADA FAST/TOOLS system periodically collects the field wireless device data stored on the FCN/FCJ controllers. Even if the communications between the FCN/FCJ controllers and the FAST/TOOLS system are cut, the data can all be safely restored on the FAST/TOOLS system using time stamps. In this way, field wireless data is kept secure.
