Stardom Wins Editor’s Choice Award from Control Engineering Magazine

January 16, 2004 -- Yokogawa's network-based control system, STARDOM^TM, has been selected as one of Control Engineering magazine's Editor's Choice Award recipients and is, therefore, now eligible for the newly created Engineers' Choice Award.

“We are very proud that Stardom's spirit of innovation is recognized by one of the most influential publishers,”; said Chiaki Itoh, general manager of Yokogawa's Industrial Automation Systems business unit in Tokyo. “To make this innovative system easier for an engineer and operator to use we are now offering the all-in-one solution package - eCUBE. With this new package and the FF-H1 connectability, Yokogawa will be able to further emphasize the uniqueness of Stardom.”

With the Stardom system, the total cost of ownership is incredibly reduced by combining commodity type components, and more than that, the way of working will be dramatically changed with the benefit of the leading edge network technology. Engineer, operator can acquire and share essential information such as alarms via PC, PDA, and cell phone anywhere, anytime. To increase networkability and versatility, Java, which is the most suitable Web language, and IEC61131-3, the international standard control language, have been adopted. Not just web networkability but also the FOUNDATION Fieldbus interface connectability is well evaluated by many users.

“It (Stardom) was an obvious choice for the Editor's Choice award,” said Mark Hoske, Control Engineering's editor-in-chief. “It meets all the criteria of the award - service to the industry, technological advancement, and market impact. It will be interesting to see just how strong an impact a system like this will have on the U.S. market."

Each month, the editors review hundreds of new product releases of which only the best are published. At the end of the year, the editors review the published products and select the winners based on the criteria of service, technological advancement, and market impact.

Control Engineering's editorial categories for this year's awards were: Embedded Control; Human-Machine Interface; Instrumentation and Process Sensors; Machine Control and Discrete Sensors; Motors, Drives, and Motion Control; Networks and Communications; Process and Advanced Control; and Software and Information Integration. The winner selection process is conducted by Control Engineering editors from all the new products featured in the previous year's issues of the hard copy magazine, Control Engineering online, and Control Engineering's topical emailed newsletters.

The eight Engineers' Choice Awards, one from each of the magazine's editorial categories, will be announced at a ceremony February 24 in Chicago.
