Special: Japanese Lesson
Lesson20: "Christmas in Japan"

The Japanese celebrate Christmas with holiday decorations, Santa Claus, gift giving, and Christmas music in a similar way as in the United States. However only about 2% of Japanese consider themselves Christians in the religious sense, and for adults, Christmas Eve is seen largely as a time for lovers.

A:

Hey, what are you doing on Christmas Eve?

Ne, kurisumasu ibu ha dousuru-no?
B: My boyfriend said he's taking me to Yokohama. Bouifurendo ga Yokohama ni turete itte kureru-no.
A: Really? What are you going to do there? Honto? Soko de nani wo suru-no?
B: We'll have dinner at a fancy restaurant and then take a walk along the promenade.

Osharena resutoran de syokuji wo shite, sorekara futari de shoutengai wo aruku-no.

A:

How romantic!

Romanttiku-ne!
B: Isn't it? By the way, what are your plans? Deshou? Tokorode, anata no yotei ha?
A: OK well, nothing really, I'm baking my boyfriend a Christmas Cake. Ano-ne, amari taishitakoto jyanai kedo, bouifurendo ni kurisumasu-keeki wo tukutte ageru-no.
