Yokogawa IS100 and IS700 Network Intrusion Sensors Adopt VShell Encrypted Communication Software from VanDyke Software in the US

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that the company has adopted the VShell secure shell (SSH) based encrypted communication software from VanDyke Software in the United States (headquarters: Albuquerque, New Mexico; CEO: Jeff P. Van Dyke) as an option for its IS100 and IS700 network intrusion sensors that detect unauthorized access to a network. Yokogawa has begun marketing of the IS100 and IS700 with the VShell option.

Background of Adoption

Disturbances in the services of corporations and Internet Service Providers (ISP), as well as common mischief such as the leakage of and tampering with critical information caused by unauthorized access to a network, is on the rise. E-government, based on the e-Japan Initiative of the Japanese government, has also begun to be studied. Under these circumstances, the security of networks is becoming increasingly important.
An intrusion detection system (IDS), which continuously monitors unauthorized access to a network and raises an alarm or cuts off the session upon detection of unauthorized access, is employed by increasingly many companies, together with a firewall to protect their corporate networks - i.e., intranets fortified against malicious attacks.
Yokogawa IS Series network intrusion sensors are appliance models Yokogawa developed specifically for IDSs of Internet Security Systems, an IDS giant. For a large-scale network, an administrative terminal is used to administrate multiple IS Series sensors. VanDyke Software's VShell SSH server reinforces the security of communications between the IS Series sensors and administrative terminals with authentication, strong encryption and data integrity.

Features

  1. Secure Shell (SSH) based encrypted method of data transportation
With the adoption of VShell from VanDyke Software, a major player in SSH-based encryption systems, communications on all paths are encrypted, offering reinforced security and worry-free remote administration of IS Series sensors.
  2. Secure replacements for Telnet* and FTP**
Conventional and nonsecure Tellnet and FTP protocols are replaced with secure access and file transfer capabilities of SSH for worry-free utilization.

Main Target Markets

Network administration departments in government and municipal agencies, corporate firms, or other organizations dependant upon internet service

Internet service providers and application service providers
Overview of IS100 and IS700

The IS100 and IS700, being the first IDS appliance server products produced in Japan, incorporate intrusion detection software from Internet Security Systems, the top supplier of intrusion detection systems (IDSs). IS100s and IS700s, allocated to points at which a network connects to the outside and to critical segments that should be protected, monitor all communication packets to detect any sign of invasion.
When an IS100 or IS700 identifies an attack, it automatically raises an alarm by e-mail to the network administrator in real time, cuts off the session in question, makes temporary changes to firewall settings, and completes other critical operations.

* Telnet: A protocol in the TCP/IP suite that enables individuals to log on to and use a remote computer.
* FTP: Acronym for File Transfer Protocol; an application-level protocol widely used for copying files to and from remote computer systems on a network using TCP/IP.
