2. What is Exaplog

CENTUM and other DCSs collect alarm and event messages and display them in historical alarm & event message lists such as the one shown below.

Exaplog-message

The records are gathered without fail and are carefully managed, but it is not easy to accurately analyze the causes of these alarms and events. It is also difficult to manually compile the huge amounts of data that can be collected.

What if all these historical event messages were displayed in the following windows?

Exaplog-disp

Exaplog helps operators spot trouble areas at a glance and answer the questions of what, when, and where by graphically displaying alarm and event data in easy to understand windows.

Look at the event balance trend (EBT) graph. The red bars show how many alarms & events have occurred over a set period of time. The blue bars indicate the number of touch operations. When these are not well-balanced, e.g. when there are too many alarms and two few responses, or vice versa, it means that there is room for improvement in how operators are controlling operations. The category sort window indicates what types of events are represented by the red bars in the EBT graph. The point ID sort window shows in descending order how many alarms and events have occurred for each tag. Using the information shown in this one window, let's find out the cause of the most frequent alarm.

The scope in filter displays detailed data for a specific time period. In this case, a portion of the graph is highlighted where there were many alarms & events as well as touch operations.

Repeat filtering until you come up with one or more root causes  of frequent manual operations.

In this case, control became unstable when pressure inside a reactor rose too high, requiring operators to manually change the MVs to bring down the pressure. Similar situations occurred several days in a row.

After analyzing the situation in more detail, the customer found a way to automate this process with an FCS sequence so that no more manual operations would be required.Exaplog-scorp03

The drawing on the bottom of this page shows what happened when manual adjustments to the reactor were eliminated. The EBT graph clearly shows a drastic reduction in alarms & events.

With Exaplog, operators can quantitatively analyze trouble points in a DCS event log and take in-depth looks at alarms to optimize a plant's alarm management system.

Now let us show you data on two customers who introduced the Exaplog event analysis package in their plants and succeeded in drastically reducing alarms and operator manipulations.

Company A with 1,000 monitoring points and 100 control loops
 Before  After
Process alarms 100 times/2 hours  Less than once/2 hours
Operator manipulations 4.8 times/10 minutes Less than once/10 minutes

Company B with 1,000 monitoring points and 100 control loops
 Before After
Process alarms 46 times / 2 hours  Less than once / 4 hours
Operator manipulations 4.6 times / 10 minutes Less than once / hour
