1. Introduction
In the mid 1970s, distributed control systems (DCS) were introduced for plant and process control. Since 1975, we have sold over 20,000 CENTUM series control systems all over the world and the Yokogawa name is well established in the control business. It is difficult to find a plant that runs without a DCS or some other type of production control system. With the development of its VigilantPlant? concept, Yokogawa is continuing the evolution of the DCS by delivering users Operational Excellence that ensures their plants run safely and quietly.
With almost all processes and operations automated nowadays, the next step is achieving stability while increasing both efficiency and production capacity. And it is best to achieve these aims without additional investment in facilities, equipment, and human resources.
No matter how advanced a control technology may be, there will always be a need for manual operations during startup/shutdown and other transient operations, grade or recipe changes, and troubleshooting. And statistics demonstrate that performance during such manual operations is dependent on operator skill and experience.
Not all operators are skillful and have abundant experience and knowledge of procedures, processes, plants, and industries. And highly competent operators are not always available when a crisis strikes. How do you safely manage a plant and minimize losses and damage if such problems are unavoidable?
Do you train operators? That can take a long time. Can you wait until your operators acquire the necessary skills? And do you worry that your trained operators might leave your company, meaning you'd have to start all over again?
Do you try to automate your operations even further? That's a good idea. Automated operations are not dependent on the skills of individual operators. But what do you do about transient operations? Complicated procedures are required and that is why they are performed manually.
For such needs, Yokogawa has the Exaplog ("exa-p-log") Event Analysis Package
