Yokogawa has a wide range of products to assure proper monitoring of scrubbers, pH during batch neutralization, percent concentration with conductivity measurement, and various other applications as a few are shown below. i.) Power plant boiler houses designed to burn coal or high sulfur oil are required by Federal and State pollution regulations to scrub” (remove) sulfur dioxide from flue gasses to meet emission limits. SO2 in flue gasses is known to be harmful to the environment, as it is one contributor to the formation of acid rain. pH control is critical for the proper functioning of the scrubber system. ii.) There are numerous industrial applications where measurement and/or control of the specific chemical strength of the process is critical for optimizing the production of the end product. These specific concentrations are obtained by mixing a full strength solution with water to achieve the desired percent concentration. A flow-ratio control is used as a coarse control in this operation, and a controller in conjunction with a conductivity analyzer or transmitter serves as a trim control. Conductivity measurement is a reliable indicator of the concentration of most acid or base solutions. In determining the proper loop components for a particular application, the materials of construction will be of primary concern. A Chemical Resistance Chart should be consulted, or an Application Data Sheet completed and sent to the factory in order to insure an installation that will be suited for the intended application. iii.) Steam is used throughout the world as a means of producing energy. This steam is converted back to water in condensers and further cooled in Heat Exchangers. Where ever there is steam, there is a process liquid to be cooled. Since steam is used to produce energy, corrosion of the heat exchanger is a constant maintenance problem. The use of corrosion-resistant metals and improved methods of water treatment have minimized the effects of corrosion on the steam side of the heat exchanger, but corrosion on the process side remains a serious problem. Measurement and control of Heat Exchanger Leakage can help prevent costly maintenance, repair and downtime. The simple, essentially maintenance-free measurement of condensate conductivity will give the operator necessary information (or provide automatic control) to prevent sever damage to the boiler should a breakthrough of the heat exchanger occur.
