Hardly a day goes by without new information on hackers, malware or IT security issues in general. According to the Federal Republic of Germany\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verfassungsschutz.de\/embed\/annual-report-2016-summary.pdf\">Annual Report on the Protection of the Constitution<\/a>, many threat sources including political activists, religious extremists, and state actors have engaged for years in targeted cyber-attacks on German industry.<\/p>\n<p>The focus is mainly on<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chemicals,<\/li>\n<li>Pharmaceuticals,<\/li>\n<li>Engineering,<\/li>\n<li>Electrical &amp; electronic,<\/li>\n<li>as well as numerous other sectors characterized by innovative technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the case of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/chinarealtime\/2014\/07\/08\/searching-for-chinas-uglygorilla\/\">UglyGorilla<\/a>, the term \u201chacker\u201d has meanwhile been replaced by \u201ccyber soldier\u201d. Cyber soldiers succeed in remaining undetected in \u201cenemy\u201d computer networks for a very long time, as happened at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.br.de\/nachrichten\/thyssenkrupp-hack-china-100.html\">Thyssen-Krupp<\/a> (in German).<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u201cWannaCry\u201d and Co.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Only recently, cyber attacks by\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bgr.com\/2017\/05\/15\/wanna-cry-ransomware-virus-windows-wannacry-explainer\/\">WannaCry<\/a>, another malicious software program, made the headlines in newspapers everywhere. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bahn.com\/en\/view\/index.shtml\">Deutsche Bahn<\/a>, the state owned railway operator, was among the most prominent victims in Germany. In the UK, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tagesspiegel.de\/weltspiegel\/wanna-cry-bka-uebernimmt-ermittlungen-nach-weltweiter-cyber-attacke\/19797084.html\">National Health System hospitals<\/a> (in Deutsch) in several major cities were paralyzed.<\/p>\n<p>This brutal virus had scarcely been brought under control when the next ones appeared on the scene in its place. Their names: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.n-tv.de\/wirtschaft\/Das-muessen-Sie-zur-Petya-Attacke-wissen-article19910503.html\">Petya \/ GoldenEye<\/a>, both instances of ransomware. Ransomware locks up all files on the computer under attack and demands a payment (ransom) in return for unlocking them. With this particular form of cyber attack, the extent of the damage is instantly evident. You know straight away that you\u2019ve been hacked. Here in Europe, it can take as long as 469 days for an attack to become \u201cvisible\u201d. That\u2019s more than a year, during which cyber soldiers can roam freely within your company. More than a year in which they can hijack and manipulate your customer and business data.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s impossible to say exactly how much damage is caused every year by industrial espionage.
