Depending on the chemical substance involved, this circumstance can sometimes entail a risk of explosion. Elementary protection must therefore be provided to rule out the possibility of explosion. Ideally, this protection should prevent an explosive gas mixture from forming in the tank\u2019s gas phase in the first place. This can be achieved by inerting the gas phase by blanketing it with nitrogen.<\/p>\n<h2>Oxygen content measurement may be required<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8474 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yokogawa.com\/eu\/blog\/chemical-pharma\/app\/uploads\/2019\/03\/TDLS-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"317\" \/>This generally means nitrogen being blown in by means of mechanical pressure reducing and pressure relief valve, so that nitrogen overpressure of approximately 25 to 35 mbar is maintained in the gas system. In the past, people relied on the equipment functioning properly and, at best, only measured overpressure. The idea was to ensure a degree of certainty that everything would work as planned. However, in these times of ever stricter safety and security requirements, this is no longer adequate when carrying out a safety assessment. Instead, it is essential to measure the actual oxygen content \u2013 especially if the equipment concerned has been classified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Safety_integrity_level\">SIL<\/a> (safety integrity level) application.<\/p>\n<p>This was recently the case at one of Yokogawa\u2019s customers in Germany. The company in question had to demonstrate that there is no oxygen in its tank farm. The relevant application was classified as SIL2. \u201cAn extractive measurement would have cost the customer too much money in this specific instance and, above all, the need for constant maintenance was a major deterrent. It was decided to seek a solution that is largely maintenance-free and meets the requirements for SIL2. We were able to meet those requirements exactly with our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yokogawa.com\/solutions\/products-platforms\/process-analyzers\/gas-analyzers\/tunable-diode-laser-spectrometer\/\">TDLS8000<\/a> (Tunable Diode Laser Spectrometer),\u201d reports J\u00fcrgen Kerndlmaier, the field sales representative responsible at Yokogawa.<\/p>\n<h2>Attractive package solution with TDLS<\/h2>\n<p>In this particular scenario, the oxygen content had to be determined in the gas balance pipe of a tank farm which is used to monitor the inerting of the system. \u201cThat kind of application can be found in virtually any chemical plant that has tank farms or production tanks,\u201d says Kerndlmaier. \u201cIt was almost certainly a big advantage for us with this project that Yokogawa has long made a name for itself as a supplier of laser systems,\u201d he adds. \u201cFrom the very first meeting to the final commissioning, we were able to provide the client with an attractive package solution, and we\u2019re obviously really pleased about that.\u201d Yokogawa has already realized similar applications in this field in Germany on previous occasions, some of them with the predecessor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yokogawa.com\/search\/?q=TDLS200#stq=TDLS200\">TDLS200<\/a>, which has been used there successfully for more than 10 years now. The laser spectrometer\u2019s high measuring accuracy, combined with its ease of maintenance, is one of the outstanding features of this solution for monitoring inerting.<\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, Yokogawa is set to expand the product range shortly.
