Useful information for understanding region-specific interaction between delivered drugs and host biomolecules can be provided from such analysis. Also, the drug distribution in different tissues can be estimated to understand better anti-microbial resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-resistance-towards-antibiotics\">Resistance towards antibiotics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, in many cases, a disease is not beaten by developing a drug. After some time, bacteria can change themselves or get resistant to certain active ingredients. Thus, antibiotics are simultaneously a blessing and a curse. The resistance towards antibiotics is one of the most problematic issues in our modern society. The massive use of antibiotics leads to an increase in the resistance of bacteria towards antibiotics. For example, tuberculosis (TB) is the top ten cause of death worldwide which is caused by the mycobacterium tuberculosis and multi-drug resistant TB is a continued threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter wp-image-2215 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yokogawa.com\/eu\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/06\/statistic_id280015_incidence-of-tuberculosis-worldwide-by-region-2019.png\" alt=\"tuberculosis incidence worldwide\" class=\"wp-image-2215\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Incidence of tuberculosis worldwide in 2019, by region. It is a very insidious disease because in most cases there are no symptoms at first <em>(latent tuberculosis)<\/em>. In 10 % of all latent tuberculosis cases, symptoms show at a later stage. If not treated, Tuberculosis disease can lead to death. Persons with active tuberculosis are contagious. The disease spreads by droplet infection (coughing, sneezing, speaking, or spitting).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of active Tuberculosis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>chronic cough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weight loss<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fever<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>night sweat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mucus containing blood.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-drug-distributions-in-tissues\">Drug Distributions in Tissues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-medium wp-image-2197\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yokogawa.com\/eu\/blog\/app\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/06\/melanie-bailey-600-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Melanie Bailey\" class=\"wp-image-2197\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Melanie Bailey (University of Surrey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prof. Melanie Bailey from the University in Surrey measures drug distributions in tissues after they were spiked with drugs.<\/strong> She is using a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yokogawa.com\/eu\/blog\/life-innovation\/subcellular-sampling-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">single cell extraction method<\/a> in addition to LC-MS that improved measurement precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this method, the working group in Surrey could <strong>probe local drug concentrations in tissue and validate them<\/strong> by using nano capillary extraction and liquid chromatography. The Yokogawa Subcellular Sampling System allows subcellular sampling while retaining the positional information in an automated and user-friendly manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The combination of the Yokogawa Subcellular Sampling System together with LC-MS is a powerful tool to discover the distribution of drugs in tissues.
