Expert and author Nick Cross from Marex

As a marketing professional with over fifteen years of progressive experience within digital, marketing and sales environments, I joined Yokogawa in 2015 and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the marketing team at Yokogawa Marex. Yokogawa Marex develops specialist software solutions that develop, promote and support software and IT solutions for process information management in production facilities such as oil refineries and chemical/petrochemical plants across the globe.

With in-depth knowledge and understanding of the marketing environment with a key emphasis on effective customer communication, today I am responsible for raising the profile of Exaquantum – Yokogawa’s plant historian solution. By acquiring data from all facets of a process and transforming data into easily usable, high-value, widely distributed information, it enables organisations to achieve safe, reliable and optimal plant operations.

Outside of the workplace, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two children, exploring local beaches and the picturesque countryside on the Island. I am keen on watching and playing sports including football, cycling and running and in enjoy dining out with family and friends to relax.

As a person, I am an early adaptor of new technology.  Similar to many Japanese companies, Yokogawa’s key drive is quality and reliability. This blend of personal drive together with a strong company vision helps my team to deliver effective solutions for my customers.

With 30 years’ experience at Yokogawa, I have been involved with almost every part of plant automation. Currently, I am responsible for Advanced Solutions, which are solutions and services that run on top of the process control system. I am in contact with many of our European customers about digital transformation, IIoT and IT/OT convergence. These topics are important drivers for our industry to stay ahead of the competition and to keep our environment safe and clean.

With this blog, I want to share with you my journey, including both best practice, but also bad practice. All experiences are very valuable because we can learn from them, and the lessons learned will drive us forward.

As a dedicated Marketer and Digital Native, my dedicated goal is to achieve more awareness for the Yokogawa brand. It’s gorgeous to promote this blog and also our upcoming Life Sciences Blog. So pay attention to the blog and our Social Media Channels- follow us 🙂

Sustainability is very important to me and I try to integrate this topic into the blog. Further, as a communication scientist, I am interested in the communication aspects of AI and digitalization.  How will we communicate in a digital world? Which ethics will we need in the world of IoT?

In my free time, I like to spend time with family & friends, join #teamneedtogotosports, or enjoy a good book.

As a Mechanical Engineer, I joined Yokogawa in 2007. Before joining Yokogawa I had the chance to collect broad project experience in global infrastructure projects.  Being in the manufacturing side of Yokogawa, my current role as a Support Engineer is to facilitate sales and EPC projects involving Flow Meters.

You can only gain expertise by working with the users and get an understanding of their industry by going to those places. With the deep product knowledge and a go-to attitude, I witnessed Yokogawa Flow Meter applications and developed solutions in the Oilfields of Texas, Refineries in Europe and Russia, Petrochemical and Vegetable Oil Industry in Asia and Loading Installations in Europe. The only way to communicate is to speak the industry-specific lingo and provide reliable support to our sales.

Besides daily Sales Support, my main task is to share knowledge and provide product training to Yokogawa Sales all over the world. This activity is very enjoyable because of the exchange with all the different people of Yokogawa and our customers.

I recently graduated from university in June 2018, acquiring a BA (Hons) in Business and Marketing Management. During my time at university, I was fortunate enough to gain valuable hands-on experience in digital marketing through a placement within the Car Hire industry, working on international campaigns for two global brands.

Since graduating and securing a marketing role at Yokogawa, I have been introduced to the automation industry, which I thoroughly enjoy learning about, especially IIOT and digital transformation as I am keen to see where it takes businesses in the future. My main role at Yokogawa Marex is assisting with the creation of marketing material and content for distribution across all of our channels to promote our products and solutions including Exaquantum.

In my free time, I like to keep active by running (the Isle of Wight has a lot of scenic routes so it never gets boring!) and also Yoga. I very much enjoy food and socialising with close friends over a glass of wine or two!

Besides sports, movies and my dog is marketing and communication a big passion of mine. I am a real marketing-aholic… When you have little to do with this beautiful profession, let me tell you this: marketing means that you tailor your communication and campaigns to your target audiences, so they become your fan and share their enthusiasm with fellow professionals. By communicating with them, sharing knowledge, keeping the contact warm, meeting virtually, and presenting interesting offerings.

I have 25 years of experience in the smart use of marketing. Since 2019 I work for Yokogawa and I feel at home in this originally Japanese company despite my Dutch in character (extravert and quite direct). But it works! For example, I was asked to start a journey to a greater place to work with 8 Yokogawa ambassadors. And proactively I translate current themes with a smooth pen into, for example, an effective campaign or interesting webinar. Together with my colleagues, we ensure that Yokogawa’s market positioning in the Netherlands becomes stronger. That we are better found. And that, despite our modest nature, we bring our Unique Selling Points into the spotlight. So do read our blogs and vlogs and let’s keep each other informed via LinkedIn!

My passion for leadership & business transformation, through innovation and Agile development, has made me apply my experience for Yokogawa since 2004 for our clients and partners. Strategic support and creating space for collaborative innovation is an important moto for me as a Life Cycle Sales Manager and Agile Coach. In this way, together with my team, I help our clients to gain more control and improve the productivity, efficiency, and sustainability of their plant. But how do you initiate change? First, you must recognize the ‘burning platform’. Then you draw up a clear vision (the ‘why’) after which you start working with inspiring leadership, empowerment of the organization, a focus on motivation and communication.

At Yokogawa, we develop along with others and started with Agile Innovation Squads. These teams work with an agile method on new business models around themes such as energy transition, smart sensors and the prevention of barn fires. In practice, this creates a framework for creativity, speed and space. This is an iterative process, so accept that not everything always works out. That is precisely why leadership is needed, as well as visible short-term results. My contribution on the blog site will mainly be about innovation and change management.

Functional Safety (FS) is what makes my heart beat faster. In this area I work on FS project assessments, FSM audits, FS training and guiding a team of specialists. I can also call myself FS Expert (TÜV Rheinland) in the areas of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Functional Safety Management (FSM).

I also cooperate on an international level in the direction and framework of engineering safety systems. For this we have the GM604 as a law within Yokogawa, which is the only one with a governance board, in which I can join the discussion on compliance.

Because I want to leave the world a little safer than I found it, the position of trainer and team leader fits me perfectly. With the biggest reward when the “safety pilot flame” also lights up by someone else!

As well as being a Chartered Chemist and member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, I have almost 30 years’ plant and process industry experience, including the Oil & Gas, Petrochemical, Chemical, Mining and Minerals, Pharmaceutical, Power and Water industries. Starting as a chemical process engineer, I’ve also worked in technical applications support, product management, sales, marketing, engineering, and R&D and have been granted several patents for novel industrial equipment designs.

In my role with Yokogawa RAP, I’m particularly interested in balancing new digital solutions and safer ways of working alongside traditional plant methodologies, to help our customers to understand and access the power that digital risk assessment and Operational Risk Management (ORM) technologies can bring; to provide safer and more innovative ways of working that can really drive continuous cultural safety improvement, but without losing the history and experience gained over all those pre-digital years!

Besides work life, I have 4 children, who keep me and my wife busy, but when I do get some free time, I enjoy running, cycling, and disappearing into a good book.
