Optimum control of production and manage the costs

Raw materials and end products are accepted, processed, stored and delivered in almost all industrial processes. In order to optimally control production while avoiding unnecessary costs and ensuring product quality, the volume flows must be recorded correctly and seamlessly. This task should be solved as precisely as possible and with minimum pressure losses. The application-specific parameters must, of course, be taken into account, such as the type and composition of the medium to be measured, process pressure and temperature range.

Do you need to compromise between measuring accuracy and pressure loss?

Reliable and highly accurate flow measurements are defined as mass measurements according to the Coriolis principle. The selection process of a Coriolis flowmeter to be used for wide flow ranges or turndown is often characterized by a compromise between the pressure drop and the measuring accuracy. Of course, the purchase price also plays a role in the selection process.

With the Rotamass Total Insight product family, we offer an application-oriented, broad and versatile range of Coriolis flowmeters, focused on the needs of users. This is why we actively seek dialogue with our customers. Our sales support engineers look at flowmeters in practice: From oil fields in Texas, refineries in Europe and Russia, to chemical plants in Asia. Good consulting does not come from theory, but from practice. We know what we are talking about. That’s what we’re all about: We want to provide an optimally tailored solution for each of our customers.

Use case

One of our customers from the chemical industry was looking for a suitable 4″ (DN100) measuring device to realize the loading of different chemical raw materials by ship. The following points were of great importance for the customer:

  1. The most important factor was the loading time, which is also linked to the pressure loss generated in the measuring instrument. The higher the pressure loss, the longer the loading time. In order not to exceed the specified loading time with an average loaded quantity of 78t/h, it was desired to limit the maximum permissible pressure loss to 500 mbar.
  2. To measure the raw materials as accurately as possible – from the start to the end of the loading – in order to enable loss-free settlement of the delivered raw materials. The measuring accuracy was specified at 0.1% of the measured flow rate.
  3. The cost of the device was also crucial, as many terminals needed to be equipped.

In order to fulfil these requirements in the best possible way, we were able to offer the customer a selection of various Coriolis flowmeter sizes. The newly introduced 4” (DN100) additional Rotamass Prime sensor of the Rotamass Total Insight product family helped to convince the customer to choose Yokogawa. It has best-in-class zero point stability, leading to a high accuracy of 0.1 % over a large flow range (turndown 1:20 from 8.5 t/h to 170 t/h). With favorable costs compared to larger instruments, the decision to select the Rotamass Prime sensor was much easier. In addition, the Rotamass Prime sensor design is optimized to achieve low-pressure loss with short tubes path and face to face length, as well as large internal tube diameters, and meet the customers’ expectations in terms of loading time. The pressure loss under the given process conditions (flow rate of 60 t/h up to 96 t/h) lies between 160 mbar and a maximum of 395 mbar and falls within the required specification.

Rotamass Prime sensors represent the optimum solution for this customer application, providing versatility with superior turndown and low-pressure loss in various industries, where precise & reliable flow measurement are indispensable for safe and correct process control.
