The Achievements of Yokogawa's Measuring Instruments over the Past 100 Years and Our Commitment to the Future

  • Kenichiro Haga*1

*1 : Strategic Development & Engineering Department, Yokogawa Meters & Instruments Corporation

Yokogawa Electric Corporation was founded in 1915 to manufacture analog meters. Since then, Yokogawa has been leading the measurements industry in Japan, especially in the areas of power and waveform measurement, and this year we celebrate our 100th anniversary. This paper reviews some of the 100-year achievements of Yokogawa's measuring instruments in the area of electrical energy, which is regarded as important for achieving a global mission of sustainable societies. This paper also covers today's measurement targets, the relevant technological issues, and the trends of international standards towards enhancing more efficient energy usage.

Yokogawa developed the PX8000 precision power scope, a high-accuracy power meter, which can measure reactor losses in inverters, motors and the like, by analyzing waveforms. The major specifications of the instrument are as follows: basic accuracy is 0.2%, voltage measurement bandwidth is DC and 0.1 Hz to 20 MHz (-3 dB, typical), and current measurement bandwidth is DC and 0.1 Hz to 10 MHz (-3 dB, typical). The PX8000 offers the functionality usually provided by a waveform measuring instrument, such as a variety of triggers, tracking, statistical processing, and waveform parameter calculation functions. Furthermore, to improve measurement accuracy at low power ratios this product comes with a de-skew function for correcting signal delays from the current sensor and a data latency adjustment function. This paper describes the PX8000, focusing on a newly developed element dedicated for power measurement and technology for phase correction.

The 2553A Precision DC Calibrator, Pursuing High Accuracy and Stability with Inherited Usability

  • Takuya Hiyoshi*1

*1 : Development & Engineering Dept. 1, Yokogawa Meters & Instruments Corporation

Yokogawa Meters & Instruments Corporation has recently developed the 2553A precision DC calibrator. Functionally, the 2553A uses the same dial operation and sevensegment LED as those of the previous 2553 model, inheriting its excellent usability and visibility. Meanwhile, the 2553A has doubled the number of types of thermocouples that can be calibrated, from five to ten, in order to deal with a greater variety of thermometers and temperature controllers; and it has newly implemented a resistance output function for devices that use resistance temperature detectors. In terms of performance, the 2553A has achieved high-speed zero/full scale calibration and output correction of its digital to analog converter (DAC) by introducing a digitally assisted analog technology that uses a fieldprogrammable gate array (FPGA). As a result, the 2553A offers a high accuracy of ±75 ppm/year for DC voltage, ±120 ppm/year for DC current and high stability of ±15 ppm/hour for DC voltage. This paper introduces the major features and key technologies of the 2553A.

Yokogawa has newly developed the AQ7280 high-performance optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) as a successor to the AQ7275. This previous model and AQ1200 have been popular for measuring optical fiber networks during their installation and maintenance because they cover a wide range of optical networks, from a fiber to the home (FTTH) network to a core network.
While inheriting the excellent functions of the previous model, the AQ7280 comes with new features. In addition, its new optical module and improved electric circuit configuration have achieved a high dynamic range and a short dead zone.
This paper describes this new optical module and the internal electric circuit technology that have achieved the high performance, and introduces the new features of the AQ7280.

In line with the advancement of optical communications technology, Yokogawa's technology for optical spectrum measurement has also evolved, centering on spectroscopy using a monochromator. Its wavelength coverage has expanded beyond optical communication bands, ranging from 350 to 2,400 nm. Among Yokogawa's solutions, the AQ6373B covers from 350 to 1,200 nm and accurately measures the characteristics of short-wavelength lasers, LEDs and optical filters. This paper describes the wide-band measurement technology implemented in the AQ6373B.

The CQ1 confocal quantitative image cytometer, in addition to obtaining highresolution images of live cells, analyzes them numerically and statistically, and clarifies the biological functions of individual cells or multicelluar tissues. Because the CQ1 repeats timelapse imaging, measurement, and analysis of live cells, which is difficult for existing flow cytometers, the CQ1 can be used in various applications from endpoint assays to cell kinetic observations. In addition, its confocal optical system offers 3D imaging, helping biological research to advance. The CQ1, developed for measuring cellular behavior, is ideal for basic research on regenerative medicine using iPS and ES cells, in which cell culture requires strict quality control.

Measuring water levels at dams and rivers is becoming crucial for preventing disasters caused by recent abnormal weather. Some transmitters are installed more than 1 km away from an observation station, and metal communication lines are vulnerable to lightning and noise. Yokogawa has developed a crystal-oscillator type water level meter only with optical fibers, eliminating copper wiring, to secure data transmission and power supply even under severe operating conditions. This paper introduces the structure and features of this new type of water level meter.
