Environmental pollution caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has become a global environment issue, including issues on effects upon health. This paper introduces a system based on detection and sampling technologies and developed for measuring VOCs in the global environment. Small amounts of VOCs are measured with a gas chromatograph or photoionization detector (PID). VOCs in water are sampled using a sparging method. A small quantity of VOC constituents of more than 20 different types can be measured with a gas chromatograph using a programmed temperature oven. The PID can detect a ppb level of VOCs that are ionized using a vacuum ultraviolet radiation lamp. We expect these devices will be useful for improving the global environment.

The PT1000 particle analyzer system that analyzes particulates using helium microwave-induced plasma can simultaneously measure the three-dimensional status of particles, composition and size of individual particles without requiring any preparatory treatment. the PT1000 has already achieved great results with applications to identify the source of dust generation in a clean room and to evaluate engineering materials such as toner particles. Applied to the field of environmental science, the PT1000 enables the source of airborne particles to be analyzed and the constituents and compositions of contaminants in soil to be structurally identified. Many expect that this system will allow pollution status to be analyzed and the source of pollution to be identified as well as their processes to be elucidated.
This paper describes examples of analyses with the PT1000 to measure suspended particulate matter (SPM) in different areas, to measure environments inside and outside housings, and to analyze heavy metals contained in soil. This paper also describes the possibility of using the PT1000 in applications for measurement related to the environmental regulation SPM2.5 that will be enforced in a few years.

We have developed the WP402G Water Particle Counter and the WP412G Water Particle Counter software package. The WP402G can simultaneously measure the size and number of particles such as those of turbid matter in tap water. It is an on-line instrument for use in the field and is equipped with a sampling system to supply stable water flow into a detector.
This paper gives an overview and principles of this counter, as well describes its superiority over turbidity meters, for example, in showing actual field test data.

The amended Law Concerning Rational Use of Energy was enforced on April 1999 and the Specified Household Appliance Recycling Law will come into effect on April 2001 (both in Japan) in an effort to create a sustainable society in the face of worsening global environmental problems. Although conventional product design has focused on quality, cost, and lead time, manufacturers such as Yokogawa are required to include the environmental impact factor in the design. Hence, manufacturers must assess their product design so as to minimize the environmental impact of the product throughout its life-cycle from purchase of the materials and parts, through manufacturing and distribution, to use and disposal.
This paper introduces Yokogawa's design guideline, design criteria, and assessment tools for assessing product designs and developing environmentally friendly products. An example result of a "green" design and the practices of self-declared environmental labeling are also given.

Environmentally improved packaging can increase customer satisfaction significantly. We have been striving to develop creative packaging and distribution methods that safeguard product quality while reducing the impact on the environment. We replaced approximately 50% (in gross weight) of packing cushions for measuring instruments from traditional styrene foam (expanded polystyrene) to a combination of easy-to-recycle pulp mold and film cushions made of 100% recycled material by the end of fiscal 1999. Also, we have been continuously improving the way of delivering products to our customers, such as developing and testing more effective shipping methods that use less packaging, maintain product quality, and result in less waste.

As industrial plant systems have increased in scale and their automatic control algorithms advanced, the need for plant simulator systems for training plant operators has been increasing. To meet this need, we have developed a software package that facilitates configuration of a plant operator training simulator system using Extended Test Functions for the CENTUM CS 3000. By connecting Extended Test Functions to a plant model using the features of this package, the user can easily configure an operator training system on a personal computer allowing the same operations to be performed by trainees as would be at an actual HIS.

To the FA-M3 universal-range controller series that has been continuously improved under the concept of "faster, more compact, and smarter," we have added the FA-M3 R (R for revolution) resulting from the pursuit for higher speed and the WideField programming tool for FA-M3 that presents increased reusability of user programs. With the blistering processing speed of the all-new Yokogawa-developed sequence CPUs and ultra-fast I/O access, the FA-M3 R exhibits 3 to 10 times faster processing than the FA-M3 and is capable of fast periodic task at a maximum speed of 200-ms periods with its sensor control functionality. WideField, which aims at dramatically increasing the efficiency of program development and improving program quality, supports a wealth of features for delivering ultimate program reusability, such as object ladders, component macros, and local devices, as well as fully uses the advantages of the Windows system, such as allowing operations and programming with a mouse and multi-window operations.

To meet the great demand of the maintenance and service field, we have developed the 300 and 310 Series Clamp-on Testers for live-line current. The 300 and 310 series consist of miniature- and medium-sized clamp-on testers. There are six models including AC and AC/DC types that are mostly leakage clamp-on testers. This report introduces the leakage clamp-on testers.
Four models of leakage clamp-on testers (including miniature- and mediumsized models) were developed to meet the wide variety of user fs applications. The miniature-sized models are of single function type. The 300-30 handles current ranges of 30/300 mA and 30/300 A. The 300-31 handles current ranges of 3/30 mA and 30/60 A. The medium-sized models are of multi-function type that handles five current ranges between 30 mA and 300 A (310-30 RMS value model and 310-31 average value model). Improvement in the basic performance, operability, and durability were sought for both series of testers. In particular, the basic performance of the 300-31 was improved drastically from the conventional CL Series, to allow it to accurately measure a leakage current of 1 mA which conforms to the Technical Standards for Electric Facilities. This improvement is due to the adoption of a new circuit technique that electrically cancels the influence received from external magnetic fields.

We have developed the clamp-on power meter CW140, which is capable of measuring various data for energy saving and equipment maintenance in the field. Users can select from four measurement modes; Instant, Electric Energy, Demand, and Harmonics. Development focused, in particular, on measuring electric energy in the field and the CW140 can realize continuous sampling of 10 kHz. A single CW140 can serve as two measuring instruments by providing support for not only up to three-phase four-wire type systems but also dual load type systems. An accuracy of 1% and frequency range of 45 Hz to 1 kHz (including the clamp), required by the basic specifications for on-site measurement has been met. For simplicity and easy operation, a 5.9-inch LCD display and user-friendly design was adopted. This paper gives an overview of the CW140.
