Yokogawa Releases Enhanced Version of STARDOM Network-based Control System

On April 25, Yokogawa Electric Corporation will release an enhanced version of the STARDOM Network-based Control System (NCS) with new features such as CSA explosion protection certification. STARDOM already has been certified as meeting the FM standard in the United States and the Type “n” explosion protection standard in Europe. This latest version has been certified to comply with Canada's CSA standard. Yokogawa will use this opportunity to strengthen its sales efforts targeting oil upstream processes in North America.

Enhancements

1. Certification to North American explosion protection standard
In addition to having certification for the FM explosion protection standard, STARDOM is now certified to meet the CSA explosion protection standard (Non-Incendive Type “n”). Yokogawa will capitalize on this enhancement by strengthening its sales efforts to promote STARDOM's use in oil and gas upstream processes in North America.

2. New graphical web server package on STARDOM controller (Graphic Portfolio)
The STARDOM controller has been enhanced with the Graphic Portfolio web server package to facilitate the display of graphics in a web browser. With the new Graphic Portfolio software embedded in the STARDOM controller, graphics showing the operation status and process data of valves and sensors can be viewed from a general purpose PC running the Internet Explorer browser. This gives a more intuitive overview of equipment status.

3. Multiprocessing support
The Versatile Data Server (VDS) SCADA/HMI software supports dual core processors* and hyper threading technology* that increase the speed of arithmetic processing. The latest PCs with these advanced processing capabilities can be used to build control systems.
* A dual core processor chip has two CPUs that operate in parallel to increasing processing speed.
* Hyper threading technology allows a system with a single CPU to operate as if it had two CPUs.

STARDOM
STARDOM is an open network-based control system that allows the construction of a supervisory control system from the combination of components that perform functions such as control, operation, and monitoring. STARDOM employs the international standard IEC61131-3 programming environment and supports a wide range of communication protocols such as FOUNDATION fieldbusTM, HART, Modbus, and DNP3. STARDOM combines the high reliability of a distributed control system (DCS) with the universal and economical features of a programmable logic controller (PLC), and makes possible the low-cost construction of a full-scale instrumentation system with network functionality.

Main Markets and Applications

  • The operation, monitoring, and control of devices that are distributed over a wide area, such as in oil and gas fields
  • The operation, monitoring, and control of small- to medium-sized process plants in the oil, chemical, iron and steel, paper and pulp, fine chemical, semiconductor, food, and pharmaceutical industries
