SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE OF CENTUM CS 1000

  • NAKAHARA Masatoshi*1

*1 Industrial Automation Systems Business Division

The new business approach, "Enterprise Technology Solutions" (referred to as ETS) proposed by Yokogawa entails offering 'complete solutions' by employing leading-edge technology in every aspect of an enterprise's production activities. The CENTUM CS 1000 production control system for small- and medium-scale plants is a key component in this approach for the control of total industrial automation. This paper introduces the concept and system architecture of the CENTUM CS 1000.

We have developed a field control station (FCS) for the CENTUM CS 1000, a distributed control system for small- and medium-scale plants. Thus, in contrast to the FCSs of the CENTUM CS distributed control system for large-scale plants, these new FCSs are designed for small- and medium-scale plants. The main objective of their development was to make their architecture the same as the CENTUM CS's and to meet the requirements of the global market. While the CPU card, power supply card, VLnet coupler unit, and nest were newly developed, other components were either adopted from or made to be compatible with the CENTUM CS's in order to achieve the same architecture as the CENTUM CS. For example, the same input/output modules as those of the CENTUM CS are used, as well as a processor with a compatible object-oriented design and the VLnet, which has a logic sequence compatible with the CENTUM CS's Vnet. In order to make the system suitable for the global market, the hardware was made compact, low-priced, highly reliable, and easy-to-maintain as well as compliant to various international standards. The CPU card, power supply card, and VLnet coupler unit can be made dual redundant, and duplex configuration selected for each of these by the user.

CONTROL FUNCTIONS OF CENTUM CS 1000

We have developed the basic control functions for the field control stations (FCSs) of the CENTUM CS 1000, a distributed control system for medium- and small-scale plants. The acclaimed control functions of the CENTUM CS as well as enhanced functions for communicating with various subsystems such as programmable logic controllers are incorporated into one compact unit, achieving a system that is both highly functional and maintainable. The virtual test function, which was also newly developed for the CENTUM CS 1000, allows virtual field control stations to be created in a personal computer and control actions to be fully simulated and tested without actual FCS hardware.

WINDOWS NT-BASED HUMAN INTERFACE SOFTWARE

We have developed a software package called Human Interface Software (HIS) for Yokogawa's medium-scale DCS, CENTUM CS 1000. The HIS application was developed on Windows NT and includes both the man-machine interface (MMI) function of conventional DCSs and the user-friendly operation of Windows software. This paper gives an overview of the HIS application and describes its features in regard to the Windows-based operation, hierarchy of windows and open data interfaces. Moreover, this paper introduces the basic configuration of processes/threads, several methods for achieving high speed drawing, and how we have made CENTUM CS 1000 more adaptable to the global market.

ENGINEERING FUNCTIONS OF CENTUM CS 1000

  • SATO Masahito*1
  • OKADA Satoshi*1

*1 Industrial Automation Systems Business Division

We have developed the engineering functions for the CENTUM CS 1000, a distributed control system for medium- and small-scale plants. The aim of this development is to supply engineering programs that will enable every engineer to achieve the full performance capability of their CENTUM CS 1000 without special training. The engineering functions run as Windows-based applications on personal computers with the Windows NT*2 operating system. Portability of data has been prioritized to the extent that engineering data can be exchanged between the engineering functions and popular Windows-based spreadsheets or text editor applications in either a comma-delimited text or text file format.

To simplify system engineering, default settings have been prepared as far as possible. The user should use these default settings and modify them as necessary by selecting items from the dedicated menus. Engineering work has also been simplified by the categorization of engineering windows into two levels so that a system can be configured with minimal settings initially and with detailed settings later on as necessary.

In terms of the debugging and inspection phases, the virtual test function is included as one of the engineering functions in order to shorten the cycle time between debugging, correction, and verification. The virtual test function enables the engineer to debug field control station (FCS) databases at the same time from the same personal computer by inputting data values and modifying settings using the virtual FCSs (in that personal computer).

FCS DATA SETTING/ACQUISITION PACKAGE FOR RECIPE MANAGEMENT

  • KATAOKA Norikatsu*1

It is almost impossible for a single recipe management software package to cover every kind of recipe management application for differing plant scales and complexity. Our objective for the development of a recipe management package for the CENTUM CS 1000 was to design an uncomplicated package with an open interface that would be suitable for small- and medium-scale plants, the target market of the CENTUM CS 1000 distributed control system. The result of this development is PICOT, an FCS data setting/acquisition package that uses Microsoft Excel*2 as the user interface. This report gives an outline of the PICOT software package.

DIGITAL SCOPE DL708E

This paper describes our recent development, the DL708E portable 8- channel digital scope with large color display. The DL708E is designed with plug-in module architecture and equipped with 7-types of interchangeable modules, including a high-speed isolation module (10 MS/s, 10 bits), a high-resolution isolation module (100 kS/s, 16 bits), and a temperature input module. It also has a bright 10.4-inch color TFT LCD display with a wide viewing angle and supports "real-time hard disk recording." This function is capable of recording up to 128 MW in real-time using the optional internal hard disk. The scope's large 16-MW memory also enables waveforms to be observed over a long period. By using a three-dimensional CAD system to construct the mechanical design, we were able to effectively minimize the size of the instrument into one small, light unit that measures 370 (W) x 260 (H) x 183 (D) mm and weighs in at 6.8 kg. The DL708E's multi-channel measurement makes it suitable for a variety of measurement needs ranging from temperature measurements to measurement of high-speed signals with frequencies up to the MHz range, such as is required for "mechatronics" measurements, resolving the problem of failures that result when conventional oscilloscopes are used.

THE "HANDY CAL" CA11/CA12 CALIBRATORS

  • OGUMA Yoshio*1
  • NAGATSUKA Makoto*1
  • YAMAMOTO Tadashi*1
  • AOYAMA Yutaka*1

We have developed two models of battery-operated hand-held calibrators, the CA11 and CA12, which are designed for simple operation and high performance. The voltage and current calibrator CA11 can supply and measure signals of up to 30 V DC and 24 mA DC and has a current SINK function. The temperature calibrator CA12 generates a signal that simulates the signals of six types of thermocouples (TCs) as well as an resistance temperature detector (RTD), and also acts as a thermometer for the TC and RTD sensors.

This paper describes the design features and structure of these two calibrators.

JUXTA VJ SERIES OF COMPACT SIGNAL CONDITIONERS WITH TWO I...

*1 Yokogawa M&C Corporation

We have developed the "JUXTA VJ Series" -- a new series of compact signal conditioners with two isolated outputs, which can be either plugged in or mounted to a nest on which up to 16 units can be mounted.

JUXTA VJ series consists of 20 input variations as well as DC or AC power variations, of which AC-driven type produces wide ranging voltages. These variation settings have all been incorporated into a small area by using surface-mounting technology and a planar transformer.

The details of the features and construction are described below.
