Functional Safety (EN)

German languageIn the process industry, machines, plants and processes pose a wide range of potential risks. These potential risks are identified in a risk analysis. If machines, entire plants, the environment or even people are at risk in the event of a fault, these risks have to be mitigated using suitable safety measures.

Machine safety is an area of functional safety. The basic standard IEC 61508 lays the foundation for this area of functional safety. It describes requirements for systems, defines terms and abbreviations, explains how to determine the safety integrity level and contains instructions for use. The IEC 61511 series of standards governs applications specifically for the functional safety of plants in the process industry. The updated version entered into force in February 2017.

In general: The higher the risk in the event of a fault, the higher the degree of the safety measure (SIL – safety integrity level). Risks are mitigated by using what is referred to as “safety-related controls”, that is safety technology. Throughout the entire lifecycle, these controls ensure that the corresponding plant part does not pose a risk and intervene in the process in the event of an upset, bringing it into a safe defined state. Generally, the safety technology can be part of a distributed control system or a stand-alone solution.

Functional safety has also become a key issue for more productive production as well: Eliminating direct and indirect consequential costs due to damage and ensuring higher plant availability results in a much more efficient factor that has a positive effect on the plant’s overall profitability.

German languageFunctional Safety Engineer

This TÜV-Rheinland-certified training conveys all the basic, necessary knowledge on the topic of functional safety. Within the training course, participants will learn about the functional safety requirements set out in standards, be able to assess and select options for machine safety in line with standards based on sound information, and perform the necessary documentation and quality assurance steps. Participants in the functional safety training take a test on the final day, receiving a certificate as a “Functional Safety Engineer” (TÜV Rheinland) upon successful completion.

Description

Targets

The European Machinery Directive and the functional safety standards EN ISO 13849-1/-2 and EN 62061 require people and organisations performing responsible tasks during the lifecycle of a machine to have and have proof of the necessary expertise.
Based on practical examples, our experts convey the options for machine safety and how safety equipment has to be arranged and used on machines as a measure for mitigating risks.
In addition, you will learn about the organisational requirements for quality assurance and documentation in order to structure processes and provide the necessary proof.
On the final day, you will take a test and earn the title “Functional Safety Engineer (TÜV Rheinland)”.

  • Participants are familiar with the functional safety requirements set out in standards and 2017FSE meet the required criteria
  • Participants can assess and select options for machine safety in line with standards based on sound information
  • Participants are familiar with the steps required for documentation and quality assurance
