Wind Energy

Yokogawa Wind Energy solutions for reliable profitable generation.

Wind is an inexhaustible natural energy source that humans have used in one way or another for millennia. Countries around the world are developing renewable resources to diversify generation sources and help reduce emissions.

Yokogawa provides a variety of measurement and control technologies that help ensure a stable power supply by making operations more efficient and enabling remote and centralised monitoring of multiple wind power generation systems.

Challenges

Integrity of Offshore Wind Subsea Power Cables

Customer Challenge

Subsea power cable failure is frequently reported as an issue for offshore wind farm operators.

Subsea power cable failures are reported to account for 75-80% of the total cost of offshore wind insurance claims. In comparison, cabling makes up only around 9% of the overall cost of an offshore wind farm.

Solution

Using Yokogawa's Distributed Temperature Sensing Technology DTSX and CI Server SCADA, the temperature of the power cable is monitored continuously and in real-time, along its entire length enabling hotspots and temperature anomalies to be located and investigated. The temperature information provides insight into underground distribution conditions, MV, HV and EHV, and subsea power cables.

Subsea power cable temperature data is collected in real-time to detect anomalies from normal operating conditions, including variable loads, the time to an over-temperature event or the amount of current supplied through the cable before overheating can be predicted. This informs network investment planning as well as maintenance scheduling to minimise failures.

Decisions about increasing the current or deferring cable replacement are made, safe in the knowledge that the cable is operating within safe temperature limits. This maximises existing OPEX and saves on CAPEX.

Enabling Technologies

DTSX3000 Distributed Temperature Sensor

The DTSX3000 can measure up to 50 km long distances. This makes it suitable for measuring the surface temperature distribution of assets, such as long-distance power cables.

Control, Monitoring and Safety Systems for Offshore Wind Substations

Customer Challenge

Offshore Substations connect the wind farm generating assets to the onshore transmission grid. The substation is one of the most critical structures in an offshore wind farm. The energy produced by the wind turbines is collected at an offshore wind substation and converted by transformers to a high voltage transmission system. If a fault occurs, such as a fire, power black-out or an undesired situation, an emergency shutdown of systems on the substation platform might be required. This would result in all wind turbines in the offshore wind farm not producing and exporting the power produced.

Solution

Operators of offshore wind substations require high-quality systems which provide real-time visibility of substation systems and minimise the consequences of emergency situations that might compromise the operation of the substation.

Yokogawa's CI Server provides a real-time view of the entire substation systems, allowing operators to precisely dispatch electricity on-demand, ensuring the lowest energy generation cost is achieved. It is also an enabler of increasing workplace safety by reducing response times in the case of an emergency.

In an emergency, a highly reliable emergency shutdown system is required to make a choice to shut down particular systems to avert dangerous situations and protect the offshore platform and personnel. Yokogawa's field-proven ProSafe-RS safety system allows your safety application to be easily and efficiently maintained at the required integrity level following functional safety standards IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 throughout the substation life cycle. Yokogawa's ProSafe-RS provides:

  • Clear visualisation of your safety application
  • Automated test platform with a solid audit trail for efficient and precise testing
  • Management of the safety application for the life of the asset

Condition Monitoring of Floating Offshore Wind Assets

Customer Challenge

Offshore wind turbines are deployed in remote locations and are subject to harsh operating environments. The maintenance of floating offshore wind farms is a complex issue, as with any floating offshore structure, condition and integrity are critical for the asset's uptime and safety, especially when they are potentially much physically further from inspection.

Solution

CI Server is at the core of Yokogawa's floating Offshore wind condition monitoring solution. CI Server is a cross-platform supervisory control and information system that integrates industrial controls systems and sensors facilitating:

  • Remote operations for operational efficiency
  • Asset and wide-area integration for centralising real-time and offline data
  • Data-driven optimisation that builds towards computer-aided operations

CI Server SCADA, located at a remote operations centre, collects and manages the offshore asset data via Yokogawa STARDOM PLC and SMARTDAC+ GM10 data acquisition technologies. Yokogawa technologies are central to integrating, monitoring, and controlling subsystems and sensors for offshore wind energy assets' safe and stable operation. Yokogawa's floating offshore wind turbine condition monitoring solution includes the supply of third-party sensors required to monitor all asset conditions effectively.
