Increasing safety, efficiency of operation and maintenance by wireless technology

Hydrogen cooling system of Turbine generator

Turbine generator is commonly used at captive power plant in multiple industry as well as large commercial power plant. Turbine generator converts motion energy to rotary motion, and it generates electric power. It has high speed rotary motion and generates huge amount of electric power, thus turbine generator itself produces heat by friction and electro-magnetic energy. The hydrogen cooling system is equipped to keep the adequate operation temperature. Efficient cooling for turbine generator is realized by the one of characteristics of hydrogen, quite higher thermal conductivity. However, hydrogen’s explosion limit concentration is between 4 to 75% in the air and hydrogen leak leads increasing risk of explosion accident. Accordingly, hydrogen density within turbine generator keeps more than 98% in large commercial power plant. Yokogawa’s gas density meter GD402* and GD40* are commonly used and it contribute to safety operation in this application.

Challenges for operation

It is commonly to use hydrogen for cooling turbine generator but there are multiple challenges for its leak detection.

  • Hydrogen leakage is directly linked to safety risk in plant operation
  • Hydrogen’s molecular architecture is quite small, easier for leakage compared to other substances
  • It is difficult to define installation point for fixed type gas detector and its trial and error due to hydrogen's higher diffusivity
  • It must be conducted to identify leaking point by portable type gas detector even such operation is recognized as dangerous
  • Time consuming for identify hydrogen leakage location

Efficient method for hydrogen leak detection to ensure safety is required.

YOKOGAWA’s solution

Wireless Hydrogen leak detection system can be realized by combination of Field Wireless system which has high reliability and higher data refresh, and partner’s wireless gas detector. User can Install wireless gas detector to expected location of hydrogen leakage and leak experienced location such as connection points of pipes and asset, without any complexity of trial and errors, construction, and wiring/relocating.

For monitoring the hydrogen leakage, not only by DCS but also it is possible to construct simple monitoring and alerting system by Data Logging Software GA10 and Data Logger GM10 from SMARTDAC+ series.

If wireless gas detector supports safety communication capability, it is possible to construct SIL2 Wireless Gas Detection system combined with safety system ProSafe-RS. Integrating wireless hydrogen leakage detection solution for turbine generator hydrogen cooling system to existing Fire & Gas application of Safety Instrumented System makes it possible to expand coverage of Fire & Gas application more.
