How to Make Energy Management a Competitive Advantage in the UK

The global shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy is reshaping the UK’s industrial sector — is your organisation ready?

The UK’s industrial sector faces rising pressure to reduce its environmental impact — this transition isn’t just about compliance; it’s about doing the right thing for future generations that are depending on us. But beyond that, effective energy management and usage reduction can provide a competitive edge and protect your organisation amid rising energy costs and changing regulatory requirements.

ESOS vs. ISO 50001: What’s the difference?

The UK’s Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is an energy assessment and reporting program in which all large organisations (more than 250 employees or at least  £44M in annual turnover) must participate by completing mandatory annual audits. Failure to comply can result in an initial fine of £5,000 plus daily penalties as high as £500. Companies that achieve ISO 50001 can obtain exemptions from these requirements.

ESOS logo

ESOS

  • Mandatory in the UK for qualifying businesses
  • Ensures compliance with UK regulations
  • No formal certification
  • Focused on annual audits and reporting
  • Provides periodic snapshots of energy consumption
  • Maintains compliance with current regulations

ISO5001 logo

ISO 50001

  • Globally recognised gold standard
  • Offers a structured approach to continuous energy use reduction
  • Demonstrates a commitment to improved energy management
  • Focused on continuous improvement
  • Ongoing data-collection & analysis for informed decision-making
  • Ensures continued compliance as regulations evolve

Both ESOS compliance and ISO 50001 certification require engagement with third-party experts and investments in your energy management strategy. But it’s clear that the benefits of the ISO certification significantly outweigh basic ESOS compliance, providing your organisation with significant competitive advantages:

EEMS Overview

Enterprise Energy Management Services: How Does It Work?

EEMS is a cloud-based software platform that allows users to visualise their energy footprint by collecting and consolidating consumption data from a wide range of assets across a site or facility. This solution is entirely hardware-agnostic and can gather data from a wide range of sources and display it as usable information. Convert consumption data into insights on cost, associated emissions, or use forecasts.

Turn data from all your assets and systems into actionable insights:

1) Smart Building & Office Module

Extend your company's energy management capabilities from industrial facilities to the enterprise market, such as commercial and industrial buildings, data centers, and offices.
