Challenges for Customers

The challenges for end-users and EPC’s face  can be summed up as: safety-first operation, maintaining plant performance, and reducing project and operating costs.

The main areas of focus to achieve improvement are validating the control application and unifying the information model for sub-system integration.

The design inputs are constantly changing and in order to minimize the impact, these areas require integrated, automated management of the change work process, from process design input to validation testing.

Our Solutions: Yokogawa Industry and Interface Libraries offer a solution that is easy to manage and implement.

Our Solutions

Yokogawa Industry and Interface Libraries offer a solution that is easy to manage and implement.

The recent trend in Namur (NE 148) and Industrie 4.0 is to design the plant in physical modules. This design matches the control philosophy using the ISA 88 & 95 methodology. Yokogawa’s solution is the new Automation Design Suite which provides an engineering environment which makes it easier to create, re-use and maintain Industry Libraries, manage hardware and sub-system I/O information, manage changes, and provide automatic documentation.

Yokogawa’s standard industry and interface libraries provide control modules, equipment modules, and unit modules for various industries, bundled with functional specification documents, test procedures, and actual re-usable modules themselves which are ready to be used to help solve project and operational challenges. The foundation library of control modules is the basis of lifecycle efficiency improvement in all projects. Specific Industry Libraries include validated equipment modules for complex loops in, for example, LNG re-gasification, LNG liquefaction, power, and terminal automation.

In order to assure these modules are integrated correctly in the overall control design, Yokogawa provides control philosophy design guidelines for various types of processes such as furnace control and fine chemicals.

Customer Benefits

Industry and Interface Libraries offer specific benefits to different types of customers.

As an end-user, re-usable Industry Libraries have the benefit that automation can be consistently applied across plants in all locations throughout the world. Support by specialists from Headquarters is made much easier, and the consistent design helps reduce risk originating from unexpected design mistakes or integration complexity.

For an Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor (EPC) the benefits include a lower cost due to a shorter design time and less time required to re-test the modules. By using standard modules, it is also possible to reduce the number of changes required to correct mistakes or make process design changes.

Enabling Technology

In summary, Yokogawa Industry and Interface libraries are helping customers to achieve business KPIs throughout the plant lifecycle.

Plant performance is maintained through easy modification, standard methodology for start-up/shutdown of equipment and devices, automatic plant operation, and alarm & asset management solutions.

Costs are reduced through template-type engineering, utilizing previous experience and libraries, cost-effective methodology of starting up and shutting down equipment and devices, smart alarm systems and plant status monitoring.
Safety-first operation is achieved because the ESD/PSD and F&G typical applications are fully proven.

Details

The benefits of implementing consistent design have already been proven by end-users with strong centralized operation policies and technical support teams but will be made easier with the new ADSuite software. The initial investment in modular design also brings benefits in designing the overall plant and applying consistent lifecycle maintenance management policies. This reduces total cost of ownership and hence reduces OPEX.

An EPC who also owns the process license, typically is already working on standardizing the total package design in order to speed up project execution. In several cases these EPCs do the automation system design and configuration in-house to reap additional benefits by having the same in-house team execute the start-up and support the commissioning. The lessons learned are then reflected in the basic design and configuration.

In this scenario, the EPC converts the database to a modular design in-house with support for training services from Yokogawa. Each time a new plant is built, the master module library (also called class modules) are then re-used and the multiplication process of these class modules, also called instantiation, to all pumps, valves, etc. assures that changes in the class module are automatically applied to all instances. This is a great advantage over R5 in terms of quality management, as this process is managed manually in R5, resulting in possible human errors.

The benefits of instantiation of class modules and automated revision management through Management of Change are well appreciated.
