Yokogawa periodically publishes the Yokogawa Technical Report, which contains articles that take a detailed look at the technologies employed in Yokogawa's products. At this site you will find links to all of the reports that have been published since 1997 as well as links to PDF files containing the full text of selected articles from each issue.

As rapid changes transform the world into a place characterized by networkbased societies, there is an increasing need for manufacturing systems that can swiftly meet changes in market demand, steadily produce the right products at the right time, and evolve permanent and flexible solutions. Yokogawa has named this new manufacturing flow of the network era "e-RM" (short for electronic Realtime Manufacturing), and strives to develop control systems to materialize it. In the realm of process control too, applications that require their processes to be broken down and distributed demand unprecedented agility to cope with changes and call for flexible and highly cost-effective systems. The Network-based Control System (NCS) architecture is ideal for embodying e-RM throughout production activities and the STARDOM network-based manufacturing solution is a core group of components that compose an NCS.

FCN AND FCJ AUTONOMOUS CONTROLLERS IN STARDOM

We have developed two models of autonomous controllers as the core of the STARDOM network-based manufacturing solution: the FCN (acronym for field control node) is a modulus controller with superb scalability and the FCJ (acronym for field control junction) is an all-in-one controller designed for distributed in-situ installation. Both controllers incorporate "open" and standardized technologies and feature functions to implement control logic compliant with IEC61131-3 standard of the International Electrotechnical Commission and Web-based communication functions such as autonomous e-mail transmission and communication with Web pages, all in a compact, rugged body. These features realize full-scale, practical use of the up-to-date network technologies, a highly reliable architecture for stable operation, and increased engineering efficiency with the flexibility to address system changes.

VERSATILE DATA SERVER SOFTWARE

Versatile Data Server Software (VDS) is a component of a Network-based Control System (NCS) and SCADA software of a client/server architecture offering a thin client solution by use of Web-based human-machine interfaces (HMIs). Using Graphic Designer, windows with various active graphical presentations can be created without programming. Installing OLE for Process Control (OPC) client in the data server of VDS allows access to every kind of controller that has OPC server functionality and achieves integration of data and operation. This paper outlines the functions and architecture of VDS.

APPLICATION PORTFOLIOS FOR STARDOM

STARDOM allows users to pack and encapsulate the extensive know-how that system integrators have gained into reusable software parts. The Yokogawa Group has drawn on decades of expertise in configuring monitoring and control functions in the realms of process and factory automation to build libraries of extremely useful software parts available as Application Portfolios, and users themselves can package more advanced functions into a portfolio. Application Portfolios thus drastically improve engineering efficiency.

This paper presents the elemental scanner technology and CCD camera's characteristics that maximize the CSU10 Nipkow disk type confocal scanner unit.

The scanner's internal structure that embodies the theory of forming confocal images at video rate is depicted; the system configuration, spatial resolution, and noise level of the CCD camera used with this scanner summarized; and examples of applications shown.

INFRASPEC NR800 NEAR-INFRARED ANALYZER

We have developed a Fourier transform near-infrared analyzer (FT-NIR) with high resolution (4cm-1) and wide wavelength range (up to 2.5μm) by a newly developed InGaAs (indium gallium arsenide) photodiode and an actuator with double parallel leaf springs. With this near-infrared analyzer, we can retrieve the target value directly from the spectrum by using the calibration curve for relating the near-infrared area spectrum of liquid samples to the property value of the target.

Therefore, this analyzer is very useful for the monitoring of such things as properties. High-resolution (4cm-1) and measurement of a wide wavelength region (up to 2.5μm) provide highly accurate measurement and wide range of applications.
