We have been striving to develop heterojunction bipolar transistor IC (HBTIC) modules for next-generation 40-Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical communication systems, employing Yokogawa's proprietary ultrahighspeed HBT devices. With the advantages of HBTs' ultra-high speed and low jitter, we have developed a line-up of standard logic ICs offering high-quality output waveforms, including a 4:1 multiplexer (MUX), 1:4 demultiplexer (DEMUX), and D flip-flop (DFF), as well as a lithium-niobate (LN) optical modulator driver-IC obtaining a flat gain of 23±1dB in a range from 30kHz through 33GHz along with a high 5-Vpp or larger output voltage. Of special note is the operation of a 2:1 MUX IC module with two 22.5-Gbps inputs (into a 45-Gbps output) which has already been demonstrated.

This paper introduces HBT-IC modules (currently available as beta test versions for evaluation), each of which contains the abovementioned various new ICs mounted on an aluminum substrate to form a packaged module with interfacing connectors. Also mentioned in this paper are mass-produceable ceramic-packaged modules that are suitable to be set into communication equipment, meeting the commercial needs of the next-generation 40-Gbps DWDM optical communication systems.

We have developed a III-V compound semiconductor heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) for ultra-highspeed electron devices. Through developments to establish basic HBT structures, enhance highspeed performance and improve commercial reliability, we have advanced the application of HBTs to various microwave monolithic ICs (MMICs), bringing HBTs nearer to perfection. Currently, we are employing these HBTs in the development of transmitter and receiver devices for next-generation 40-Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical communication systems. This paper describes major developments to date and outlines our further study of ultra-highspeed electron device technology with an eye toward the coming era of over 80-Gbps DWDM optical communication systems.

Versatile Data Server Software (VDS) is a component of a Network-based Control System (NCS) and SCADA software of a client/server architecture offering a thin client solution by use of Web-based human-machine interfaces (HMIs). Using Graphic Designer, windows with various active graphical presentations can be created without programming. Installing OLE for Process Control (OPC) client in the data server of VDS allows access to every kind of controller that has OPC server functionality and achieves integration of data and operation. This paper outlines the functions and architecture of VDS.

AP9950 pulse pattern generator (PPG) and AP9951 error detector (ED), each having independent compact hardware of 425(W)x221(H)x500(D)mm in size, were developed to compose a bit error rate tester (BERT) for the 40-Gbps bit rate band. These PPG and ED offer measurement of bit error rates in the 40-Gbps band (36 through 43.5Gbps) with four parallel channels of 10-Gbps band inputs and outputs, and feature a wealth of measurement patterns, an auto-search feature, and burst signal measurement. They are thus ideal for development, manufacturing, verification, and testing of transmission systems as well as for devices and modules used in those systems.

We have developed a measurement system for wireless LAN to address the explosive growth of wireless LAN communication. The wireless LAN measurement system has two major features. One is the signal generator system that generates the reference signal source and a signal source under compromised conditions for the performance testing of receivers. The other is the EVM (Error Vector Magnitude) measurement system that measures modulated signals of transmitter waveforms for performance testing of transmitters. We have implemented a measurement system for wireless LAN with general measurement equipment, personal computers, and dedicated software. This paper outlines the system configuration and software functions.

With the explosive growth of the Internet, Quality of Service (QoS) over the networks has become important. In order to evaluate the networks, we have developed a QoS Monitoring System with a QoS Probe and QoS Manager Software. The IQ1000 QoS Probe captures and measures the users' actual packets with passive measurements, and then transmits the measured data to the QoS Manager Software. The QoS Manager Software collects the measured data and calculates packet delay (latency), latency variation (jitter), packet loss and bandwidth (throughput) of each one-way end-to-end communication network. The IQ1000 has dedicated hardware, which assures less packet-capturing loss. With the Simple Network Management Protocol Management Information Base (SNMP MIB) function, the QoS Monitoring System can be incorporated into general network management software.
