Remote Monitoring of Fresh Water and Sewage

As water and wastewater systems expand, scalable centralized monitoring enables efficient management of distributed assets and meets evolving user demands.

Water supply operations personnel must be able to monitor and record the operating status of all water supply pumps and water flow rates. Traditionally, monitoring has required travel to sites to check pump meters and read charts. In systems with many distributed assets such as pumps, centralized monitoring minimizes travel while providing more timely information.

Challenges

Typical challenges with traditional recorders include high operation and maintenance costs, which result from moving mechanical parts and the use of consumables such as charts, ink, and pens.
Travel is required to gather operating data at remote locations. Timely information on remote operations is not readily available at any single location. In addition, cumbersome and error prone, manual calculations of water flows are required.

Solution

A paperless recorder equipped with an SD memory card provides reliable recording without using consumables such as charts and ink.
Paperless recorders installed at each station communicate with data logging software in the main control room. A graphical solution generates custom displays for centralized data and status monitoring. A pulse input solution for the data from flow meters and mathematical functions for total water volume on the paperless recorder are included.

The report solution with periods such as hourly, daily, and monthly is provided by paperless recorders and data logging software.

Key Benefits

Paperless recorders allow users to reduce operating and maintenance costs. They no longer need to be concerned about paper jams or running out of ink. Users also realize an efficiency improvement as costs and time associated with travel to sites are also significantly reduced.

The system provides report functionality, remote monitoring using Ethernet communication, and automatic calculations of total water volume.

  • Water & Wastewater

All water, regardless of its source, has value. However, with water resources being finite, a focus on "One Water" is necessary to maximize every drop within the water system, ensuring a stable supply of clean and safe water.  As we consider current and future needs, planning and implementation are critical for long-term resilience and reliability, meeting both community and ecosystem demands. Yokogawa believes water is a human right for all. Thus, contributing to a sustainable water cycle is one of our Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
