Yokogawa Corporation of America recently concluded its 2014 Users Conference and Exhibition – North America, held Sept 9-11 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Houston, TX. Approximately 500 professionals registered, a 40% increase from the 2012 conference in New Orleans, for the 2½ day event. Users gathered to share their experiences of utilizing Yokogawa products, platforms and solutions and to visit the exhibition, featuring Yokogawa and Yokogawa partners and suppliers. The agenda included daily keynotes, Yokogawa system and product updates, user-based technical sessions including presentations and panel sessions, and four training workshops on specific ISA standards.  The exhibition included a complete portfolio of Yokogawa VigilantPlant Solutions and Services, Measurement and Control Solutions and Advanced Analytical Solutions augmented by 18 key partner suppliers.

"The Yokogawa Conference and Exhibition – North America is vital for Yokogawa because it provides a means to present Yokogawa's direction in industrial automation as well as gather feedback from our users for our products and services so that we can improve our ability to exceed their expectations," said Bruce Jensen, General Manager, Technical Solutions Support Center for VigilantPlant Solutions and Services. "Our users see it as a way to learn about complementary solutions and what's new to come in the near future as well as to network with each other and share common interests. They provide invaluable feedback for product enhancements that will satisfy their business needs and help in prioritizing those improvements for the U.S. market."

A reception held Monday evening welcomed the participants.  Yokogawa used POKEN as a digital business card and briefcase to enhance users' networking experiences. POKEN allows for the easy collection and exchange of information with a simple touch of the device.  POKEN provided for the exchange of contact details including photo and social media links, access to digital brochures and program proceedings, and the means to store all conference materials and contacts online to view and download them at any time via the web or mobile devices.

The conference began Tuesday September 9 during the General Session, with the agenda and welcome from Bruce Jensen of Yokogawa and conference chair.  Simon Lam, retired Shell executive and CEO, provided the lead-off keynote address describing precisely what users need from their suppliers.  He described several essential requirements, including a reliable DCS platform, but sitting on this platform, software packages that can make the whole IA system a power tool to achieve short and long-term financial objectives.

"The user must be able to use IA tools to reduce costs of maintenance through increased reliability; enhance safety with intelligent alarm management that ensures operational integrity; and use simulation software to further optimize production with tools we can use day-to-day that can also aid training. Users want to enhance training and retraining of operators by using more dynamic simulations."

Monday, September 8th

1:00 pm - 2:45 pm

Session 1: Industrial Automation and Control Systems Security, ISA 99/62443
Instructor: Graham Speake

Abstract: Industrial security is a matter of paramount national security as well as a matter of safe, reliable and uninterrupted manufacturing production. Recent very public attacks, such as Stuxnet, Shamoon and Flame, have revealed that directed and undirected attacks can disrupt production, damage equipment, and cause significant real costs in operations. Industrial control system networks are being replaced with commercial-off-the-shelf Ethernet-TCP/IP technology and, as a result, they now have many of the same vulnerabilities that have plagued enterprise networks. The result has been a significant increase in plant disruptions and shut-downs. Directed attacks against manufacturing facilities are expected to grow in number and sophistication, so a coordinated defense in depth strategy is required to protect manufacturing assets and networks. This tutorial will cover the best practice models, methods, and organization defined in the ISA 99 / IEC 62443 standards for industrial automation and control system security.
