Career stories - Bogdan Ababei

“If you want to learn team-work, meet other talented people, visit new countries and
become a better professional, Yokogawa is a great place for doing & having all that.”

How would you describe your job and role at Yokogawa?
I’m a senior engineer in the safety-instrumented systems team, in charge of creating design- specifications, supervising the technical progress in projects, whilst leading the team up to and including factory acceptance tests.
I discuss clients’ requirements, offering advice and explanation how Yokogawa will fulfill their expectations.
As an experienced engineer, I also support our new and young engineers in expanding their understanding of automation concepts, project life-cycle and customer requirements approach, so that on the end, with the team, we can deliver high-quality solutions to our clients. As a lead engineer it is my role to interact with other departments (DCS, hardware) in order to successfully integrate our solution in the overall project.

What is the most remarkable thing you have done at Yokogawa so far?
I came to Yokogawa in May 2015 with an 8-years’ experience from a previous automation company. Within the first year I managed to learn Yokogawa’s software and hardware and after 2 years I became a certified trainer in my field of expertise.
The most remarkable thing, I realized, was to train more than 30 students, whether new colleagues, colleagues from own or related departments; all in less than a year. During the training sessions I’ve learned how to deliver the training material so that the basic knowledge is clearly understood, how to listen and learn from my colleagues and people with different working backgrounds, how to connect information from other disciplines with my own. The feedback I received from my trainees at the end of training session made me a better communicator and a better engineer overall.

Yokogawa values 'quality of life' for their employees. How do you experience that in real life?
Work-life balance is important to everyone, also at Yokogawa. My manager understood that and acted accordingly. There were times when I needed Yokogawa to support me in taking time for myself and my family so I can be healthier and, why not, happier with my life.

I had an old injury in my right knee and required surgery, which meant I had to stay on a medical leave for three months at least. It was not an easy decision for me to take so much time off, but with my manager’s support I went ahead with the surgery. I’m now healthy again and doing stuff that I couldn’t do before, like walk for miles, run or play with my child.
In my job, I often travel abroad, usually for 4-5 weeks. When I told my manager that I couldn’t travel due to my wife’s pregnancy and I had to stay and help her, again, I found support in this decision.
I believe that Yokogawa understands that a happier employee means a better, more productive employee.

Why should talented people consider Yokogawa as a potential new employer?
If you want to learn team-work, meet other talented people, visit new countries and become a better professional, Yokogawa is a great place for doing & having all that. It offers the tools, the means and creates the opportunities to further develop your skills and knowledge.
But the best resource that Yokogawa offers is the people themselves. Since I joined, I learned a lot from my colleagues, both in the office as well as at customers’ sites were the work was challenging, client expectations were high and there was not much room for errors. I learned from them, I learned with them and during this time I became a better engineer.
What I also found to be great at Yokogawa is that new improvement ideas regarding work or office are welcomed, discussed and, if everyone agrees, implemented. There’s also a constant effort from the company to make office conditions better for the employees: new desks, improved lighting and better desk-chairs have been upgrading working conditions throughout the office.
