Career Stories - Patrick Kools

“Trust and respect are often dismissed as soft factors, yet in my professional life they have always been the most important factors, essential for all else to work.”

How would you describe your job and role at Yokogawa?
For 100 years, Yokogawa has contributed to society by automating some of the most challenging industrial processes. It is my role to bring our knowledge and experience to our clients’ boardrooms and to develop consulting solutions that enable our clients to fundamentally change their business. We are going beyond the delivery of technology alone; we are working together with our client, reviewing their business practices, changing the way they work. Industrial Cyber Security, Industrial Internet of Things, Analytics, Advanced Process Control, Energy Transition… just few topics to mention that we are passionate about! It is so exciting that we can help our clients with so many new possibilities and face the challenges together at this moment in time.

What is the most remarkable thing you have done at Yokogawa so far?
Over the past three years, I have been involved in design and delivery of a highly integrated set of systems covering the full range of business functions for one of the most ambitious LNG projects ever in the Russian Arctic region. It was very special, not just to be trusted by Yokogawa to take on such a responsibility, but also to experience how much the customer trusted us in redesigning their business to run in a very challenging environment. I really enjoyed working together with people from so many different cultures and we really succeeded in forming one close team with our customer.

Yokogawa values 'quality of life' for their employees. How do you experience that in real life?
The curved lines of the bottom half of Yokogawa’s logo stand for the company's warm-hearted people. And this really is true. To me personally, people always come first. For example, trust and respect are often dismissed as soft factors, yet in my professional life they have always been the most important factors, essential for all else to work. For many years I have worked as an independent consultant, mostly because in my mind, this human factor is disregarded by many large organizations. But, when I started to work with Yokogawa some years ago, and much to my surprise, I discovered that the message about the people at Yokogawa is right on the mark. Although we work in a complex business, people at Yokogawa are kind and very real to one another. Plenty of room is given to express our talents, as well as to balance work with personal situation. This is one of the main reasons why I decided to join 3 years ago.

Why should talented people consider Yokogawa as a potential new employer?
I like to work on things that matter. We live in the most exciting of times. With the Energy Transition picking up pace, and the incredible developments in new technologies, society will be going through a huge transition. Over the next 20 years, we will face immense challenges to change the very core of our economy, and to develop cleaner, better ways of maintaining prosperity for all people. Yokogawa as a company has fully embraced contributing to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. By working at Yokogawa you can apply your talents to topics very relevant to society today, and you will do so in an international team, with many diverse talents. Not only is it fun, but also very fulfilling.
