Our calibration laboratories are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 and can issue MRA-marked calibration certificates, enabling metrologically traceable calibration of products prior to shipment. Because we perform calibration at our own factories as the flowmeter manufacturer, we can provide highly reliable calibration and adjustment. Yokogawa supports customers throughout the product lifecycle based on the Total Insight concept.

About Calibration

What Is Calibration?

Calibration is defined as "operation that, under specified conditions, in a first step, establishes a relation between the quantity values with measurement uncertainties provided by measurement standards and corresponding indications with associated measurement uncertainties and, in a second step, uses this information to establish a relation for obtaining a measurement result from an indication." *

This means that it is necessary to obtain calibration values and their measurement uncertainty based on metrologically traceable calibration.

Purpose of Calibration

The primary purpose of calibration is to determine calibration values and their measurement uncertainty under fully traceable conditions. The purposes of obtaining these include verification of proper instrument performance, meeting audit requirements, and compliance with internal rules.

By performing calibration with metrological traceability, the reliability of measured values can be evaluated. In addition, traceability is maintained when appropriate calibration intervals are set for measuring instruments.
To achieve reliable measurements, it is important to calibrate at appropriate intervals. Furthermore, the need for calibration is increasing, as requirements for calibration based on fully traceable standards are increasingly specified in various laws, regulations, and standards.

 

What Is Measurement Uncertainty?

Measurement uncertainty is "non‑negative parameter characterizing the dispersion of the quantity values being attributed to a measurand, based on the information used." *

It can also be considered an interval that is expected to contain the value attributable to the measurand, under stated conditions. In general, calibration certificates often report expanded uncertainty with a coverage factor of k = 2, corresponding to an approximate 95% level of confidence.

 

What Is Traceability?

According to the VIM, 3rd edition, traceability is "property of a measurement result whereby the result can be related to a reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing to the measurement uncertainty." *

In general, it is achieved through the following six elements. *

(1) An unbroken metrological traceability chain to an international measurement standard or a national measurement standard
(2) A documented measurement uncertainty
(3) A documented measurement procedure
(4) Accredited technical competence
(5) Metrological traceability to the SI
(6) Calibration intervals

What Is Traceability?

Calibration compliant with ISO/IEC 17025 generally supports metrological traceability requirements, so a separate traceability diagram may not be necessary where accredited certificates are accepted.

Calibration Types

General Calibration and Accredited Calibration

  • General calibration
    Calibration is performed by the manufacturer or a calibration service provider based on their own standards. The declaration of uncertainty and whether traceability is provided may vary depending on the provider.
     
  • ISO/IEC 17025-compliant calibration
    When calibration is performed within the accredited scope of an accredited provider, metrological traceability requirements are generally satisfied.

Calibration Sites

  • Calibration performed at permanent laboratories
    Calibration is performed at the manufacturer’s or a calibration service provider’s facilities, either at the time of shipment or after the product is returned by the customer.
     
  • On-site calibration
    Calibration is performed outside the facilities of the calibration service provider, such as at the customer’s site. While calibration uncertainty is often higher than for calibration performed at permanent facilities, on-site calibration has the advantage of allowing calibration at the customer’s site.

 

Calibration Interval

The calibration interval for the instrument needs to be appropriately set by the customer. The appropriate calibration interval depends on the required measurement uncertainty, operating conditions, and instrument stability. The following are examples of how to determine a calibration interval.

  • Initially, a short calibration interval is recommended, and it may be extended after the stability of the instrument has been confirmed.
  • If the instrument has sufficient operating history and an appropriate calibration interval has been established, that interval may be applied.

Rota Yokogawa (Germany)

Calibration Facility Overview
Rota Yokogawa has a calibration facility capable of handling various types of flowmeters, with a calibration and measurement capability (CMC) of up to 0.025%. Water calibration of up to 900 m³/h and a nominal diameter of 250 mm.
The calibration laboratory is accredited by DAkkS in Germany in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025. For products calibrated at Rota Yokogawa, an MRA-marked calibration certificate can be issued. As a result, the calibration results are accepted internationally among MRA signatories.
If you send us your cleaned flowmeter, the calibrated instrument will be returned within 8 working days. Readjustment is also available upon request. An express calibration service, in which calibration is completed within 48 hours, is available upon request. This minimizes downtime at the customer’s facility.

About the Factory
Yokogawa Electric China Co., Ltd. mainly manufactures magnetic flowmeters and vortex flowmeters.

Calibration Facility Overview
Yokogawa Electric China has a calibration facility capable of handling various types of flowmeters, with a calibration and measurement capability (CMC) of 0.06%. The calibration laboratory is accredited by ASNITE in Japan in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025.
For products calibrated at Yokogawa Electric China, an MRA-marked calibration certificate can be issued. As a result, the calibration results are accepted internationally among MRA signatories.
