Yokogawa Receives SICE Awards (2013)

Tokyo, Japan - September 18, 2013

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that it has received the Technology Award, the Award for New Products, and the International Standardization Award: Incentive Prize from the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE)*1. The awards were presented at the SICE Annual Conference on September 16. Encouraged by this development, Yokogawa will redouble its product development and sales efforts.

Details about these awards follow.

Technology Award

The Technology Award is given in recognition of the development of a technology or methodology within the past five calendar years that represents a significant advance in any one of the science & technology fields or industries in which SICE is involved. Yokogawa received this award for the development of the following:

  • Development of Holistic Lifecycle Approach to Control System Cyber Security
Cyber security is an urgent concern with industrial control systems. Yokogawa has developed a methodology that keeps its customers' control systems healthy and robust throughout the entire system lifecycle. This methodology consists of processes for the identification, assessment, and analysis of threats and vulnerabilities; the introduction of corrective measures; and the conduct of regular inspections and other activities intended to offer ongoing protection from new threats. Yokogawa won this award because of the comprehensiveness and practicality of this methodology and the assessment that it presents a promising solution to an urgent industry concern.
  • Development and Utilization of MIRROR PLANT Online Plant Simulator
An online dynamic process simulator is an innovative technology that can be used to improve plant productivity and safety. This PC-based technology can be used to identify current plant operating conditions and run simulations that will precisely visualize internal conditions and predict future plant behaviors. MIRROR PLANT, which was jointly developed by Yokogawa and its subsidiary, Omega Simulation Co., Ltd., helps plant operators run plants more efficiently and assists technical staff in improving plant operations. Yokogawa and Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. jointly won this award based on the results of a field test at a Mitsui Chemicals plant that confirmed the performance of MIRROR PLANT.

Award for New Products

The Award for New Products is given to SICE member organizations who have released a new product in the previous two calendar years that represents a significant advance in any one of the science & technology fields or industries in which SICE is involved.

  • DTSX200® Fiber-optic Distributed Temperature Sensor
Shale gas and other unconventional natural resources can be released by forcing high pressure steam into underground formations where the resource is trapped. The efficiency of this process can be improved using data from a sensor that monitors temperature changes in the underground formations, which is relayed to a production control system. Based on its wealth of knowledge in the use of optical measurement technology in control applications, Yokogawa has developed the DTSX200 fiber-optic distributed temperature sensor. This sensor performs reliably even in deserts and other locations where environmental conditions are particularly harsh. Yokogawa won this award because of the contribution this product has made in facilitating resource development.

International Standardization Award: Incentive Prize

The International Standardization Award: Incentive Prize is given to individuals or organizations who have significantly contributed to a field in which SICE is involved through the proposal of international standards.

  • Hiroshi Miyata (Yokogawa Electric Corporation)
    International standards:
    • ISA-TR100.15.01-2012 Backhaul Architecture Model: Secured Connectivity over Untrusted or Trusted Networks
    • RFC*2 6052: IPv6*3 Addressing of IPv4/IPv6 Translators
    • RFC 6144: Framework for IPv4/IPv6 Translation
    • RFC 6145: IP/ICMP Translation Algorithm

Mr. Miyata has been involved in various international standard development activities. For example, as a member of the International Society of Automation's ISA 100 Committee, which is drawing up technical specifications for wireless communications in plants, he is assisting with the issuance of various technical documents. As a fellow of the IPv6 Forum (an international group for promoting the IPv6 next-generation Internet protocol) and as a technical officer and Asia representative on the IPv6 Ready Logo Committee (issues international certificates for IPv6-compatible equipment that can communicate with peer devices), he has been actively involved in the development and promotion of IPv6-related international standards. Mr. Miyata won this prize because it was deemed that he had made a significant contribution through these activities.

*1 The Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE) was founded in 1961 to promote collaboration among scientists and engineers from various fields. In such areas as measurement, control, and information systems, SICE is working hard to address issues faced by the oil, petrochemicals, iron and steel, chemicals, telecommunications, and other industries. Since its establishment, SICE has supported advanced academic research in Japan.

*2 Request for comments (RFC): Technical specifications issued by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which is engaged in the standardization of Internet-related technologies

*3 A next-generation Internet protocol that allows 2128 IP addresses (approximately 340 undecillion)
