What are PFAS?
PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of human-made chemicals used in various products for their water- and grease-resistant properties. You might find them in nonstick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and certain cleaning products.PFAS are often called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily. Their presence in water can be a significant concern due to potential health effects, including impacts on the immune system, liver, and developmental processes.
PFAS can enter water sources through industrial activities, firefighting foam, and other sources. Due to their durability, PFAS are known to persist in the environment and accumulate in living organisms, which can pose health risks. Addressing water PFAS contamination involves careful monitoring and treatment to ensure safe water quality. Our solution uses foam fractionation to remove PFAS from water supplies and destroy them with thermal plasma.

We Offer A Complete Solution
PFAS Removal with Foam Fractionation
Our Foam-ARISE Technology (Foam-assisted Adsorptive Removal based on Interstage Separation) represents a significant breakthrough in bubble-adsorption technology. It enhances both the adsorption kinetics, as well as the adsorption capacity of PFAS on the foam bubbles. This innovative approach delivers key advantages for PFAS-contaminated water treatment:
- Capacity: A single unit can process between 50,000 to 200,000 L/day of PFAS-contaminated water.
- Enhanced Efficiency: Higher treatment capability than conventional batch Foam Fractionation processes.
- Adaptive Throughput: Flexibility to have higher throughput when the PFAS contaminant loading is lower.
- High Removal Efficacy: Achieves more than 99.9% PFAS removal through a staged process.
- Automation: Automated and remotely monitored process.
- Cost-Effective: Designed for simplicity and low operating costs.
Destruction with Thermal Plasma
Our thermal plasma technology can end the PFAS contamination cycle at a commercial scale. The process can destroy AFFF, PFAS concentrates, PCB’s, and other hazardous pollutants with zero toxic pollutants in the plant effluent.
- Efficient Mineralization: PFAS destruction greater than 99.9%. Fluorine (and even chlorine) converts to harmless mineral salts such as NaF or CaF2.
- No Recombination: High-temperature process (> 2500ºC) to ensure complete PFAS molecule breakdown with all fluorinated, chlorinated, and other halogenated chemicals destroyed without exception.
- Combustion Free: No hydrocarbon fuel used, no recombination species, or products of incomplete combustion.
- Emissions Free: The plasma gas condenses at the exit of the reactor.
Case Study
PFAS Concentration and Destruction Technology Pilot Project
Project Type: Landfill leachates with PFAS loading
Location: Brisbane, Australia
Description:
Synergen Met was commissioned by a client in southeast Queensland to demonstrate the removal of PFAS from landfill leachate from a legacy waste disposal site.
They were engaged to provide a complete solution for PFAS removal from the leachate on-site.
The project used a Foam-ARISE 20-foot containerized plant to treat the leachate and remove the PFAS contaminant. PFAS concentrate was destroyed offsite at our Thermal Steam Plasma Destruction pilot plant. View Video
Outcomes:
- Removed all PFAS from treated effluent with fluorocarbon chain length greater than 4 to below the labs standard limit of detection of 0.01 ppb.
- Process rate of 8 gal/min demonstration commercial processing volumes.
- Destruction of foamate generated from the onsite plant with an efficiency of 99.9% for each measured PFAS species.
“This outcome is significant to our company, as we have a number of closed landfills with elevated levels of PFAS in landfill leachate.
This project showed us that these contaminants can be efficiently removed at the source, providing a technological solution for
our wastewater treatment partners and our landfills, with offsite destruction of PFAS ending the contamination cycle completely.”
