Industry Segment Topics

Yokogawa thoroughly revised its long-term business framework in 2021, envisioning what it shall strive to become and charting an ideal path to achieve this. Accordingly, the company restructured its industrial automation and control business, replacing product- and function-based units with those focused on industry types.

Details

Environmental changes envisioned for the next ten years that will affect Yokogawa’s business include various social issues, like increased nationalism, energy diversification, food and water shortages, resource depletion, climate change, aging populations in developed countries, and population growth. As for technology, AI, cloud computing, digital twins, 5G, and others are evolving and will need to be applied as well as utilized.

In light of these changes in the business environment, Yokogawa fundamentally revised its long-term business framework in 2021. This new framework defines where our company wishes to be in ten years and the direction toward that realization, aiming to achieve sustainable growth while providing shared value to society.

Under this long-term business framework, the business units responsible for Yokogawa’s control business have been reorganized from a product- and function-oriented structure to one centered on key industry business segments. The aim of this reorganization is to enable growth in business areas where Yokogawa can leverage the advanced technologies, expertise, and advantages that we have cultivated and accelerate business expansion and transition to a solution business model. Toward this aim, we have established three industry segments: Energy & Sustainability, Materials, and Life. Our new structure better aligns Yokogawa with customers’ businesses and focuses our efforts on the issues to be resolved for realizing a sustainable, prosperous society. In addition, with this new structure, we shall explore potential customer issues and needs while providing optimal solutions.

Pursuing Sustainability Goals and Company Growth

Yokogawa has established the “Three goals,” a set of sustainability targets that address our vision for society in 2050: the achievement of net-zero emissions, ensuring well-being, and making the transition to a circular economy.

Achieving our “Three goals” is the objective of our three industry segments, wherein Energy & Sustainability focuses primarily on net-zero emissions, Materials on circular economy, and Life on well-being.

To realize these “Three goals,” we at Yokogawa defined themes for moving forward to attain the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 through contributing to society and the environment as well as enhancing corporate value, and have designated them as key contribution areas. We have also identified business areas for resolving these priority issues in addition to setting indicators and targets for each area. Furthermore, Yokogawa will continue engaging in business based on a clear understanding of how the SDGs relate to the business areas of all three industry segments, and will develop our business in consideration of our growth as a company and our contribution to the SDGs.

Three Industry Segments to Accelerate Transformation into a Solution Business

Yokogawa’s aim with the Energy & Sustainability, Materials, and Life segments is to expand our business by accelerating our transformation into a solution business.

The Energy & Sustainability business segment protects the environment by supporting the effective use of energy and contributing to the realization of a sustainable society. Capitalizing on its expertise and strong customer relationships in the oil & gas, petrochemical, renewable energy, power, energy management, and energy storage fields, Yokogawa supports safe and optimal operations throughout the increasingly diversified energy supply chain, from production and supply through to use, disposal, and recycling.

The Materials business segment is helping to bring about a circular economy that offers comfort and convenience and is in harmony with the environment. For our customers in the functional chemicals, biomass materials, pulp & paper, textiles, steel, non-ferrous metals, mining, mobility, and electrical/electronics fields, we provide solutions that improve productivity, reduce environmental impact, and save energy.

The Life business segment provides solutions that support people's lives and protect health and safety. In addition to our activities in the pharmaceuticals and healthcare fields, we are engaged in businesses that ensure everyone has access to safe water and food. To improve productivity throughout the pharmaceutical and food value chains, we utilize the sensing and control technologies that Yokogawa has developed over the years to support innovations in product and production processes. In the water field, we aim to create new value by using the measurement technologies that have been acquired through our activities in such fields as genome analysis and scientific instrumentation.

Creating Sustainable Value and Leading the Way in Solving Global Issues

To understand the state of things in the world, it’s necessary to measure them. In addition, the serious social and environmental problems facing the world can no longer be solved by a single organization or system. We must measure the situation, share a variety of information, and organically connect organizations and systems to find our way to solutions.

In addition to the organizational restructuring, the Vision statement in our long-term business framework has been revised to express where we wish to be a company ten years from now: Through autonomy and symbiosis, Yokogawa will create sustainable value and lead the way in solving global issues. This vision embodies our commitment to work together with customers to envision their ideal future and to lead them in realizing it. To lead our customers and society to a better future, we will accelerate the sharing and standardization of information on best practices in each industry that we’ve accumulated to date, and provide a wide range of services to customers in various industries while deepening and developing these best practices.

Yokogawa’s vision is to bring about a symbiosis between industry and society in which these entities function autonomously, yet in a coordinated way. By realizing this vision and continuing to create value, Yokogawa will take the initiative in addressing social issues with a new business structure centered on addressing broad social issues.
